Payson, Arizona is a small town in the Apache County of south-central Arizona. The population was 1,846 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Payson's history goes back to 1887 when it was named for Edward Everett Payson, an officer in the U.S. Army who had been killed in action near Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. The first settler in Payson was George Atherton, who came to what is now Payson on August 20, 1887 with his family from Oregon. He and his wife were the only people living there when they arrived and built their rancho on a hill overlooking Prescott Valley (now known as Scottsdale). In 1912 Atherton donated land to establish Payson Consolidated School District No. 5 which became one of Maricopa County's six public schools districts Atherton’s grandson, Hyrum ATHERTON Jr., also contributed land to support school development in Payson and other nearby communities including Apple Valley (now Mesa), Cottonwood Heights (now Chandler), Flagstaff Heights (now Globe) and White Sands Hills (Now Goodyear). Today many of these villages are still thriving with active businesses and lively populations, thanks in part to Hyrum Jr.'s philanthropy
