Oro Valley is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area, located about 30 minutes east of the city on State Route 17. The population was 9,000 at the 2010 census. Oro Valley was founded in 1892 by Mormon pioneers who had come to Arizona from Salt Lake City. The original name for the town was Fillmore after General George H. Fillmore, an American general during the Mexican-American War and later United States Senator from New Mexico. In 1912, a post office called Fillmore was renamed Oro Valley after local ranchers Wm. Fenton and John Oro. The first school in Oro Valley opened in 1893 and it remained open until 1924 when it was replaced by a high school which became known as Northern Arizona University (NAU). NAU moved to its present location on East Indian School Road in 1954 and remains one of America's most prestigious universities. The townsite that now occupies eastern part of Oro Valley was acquired by NAU in 1916 as part of a land swap with nearby Payson. Today, downtown Oro Valley retains much of its pioneer flavor with Pioneer Park, just off Main Street between First Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard; Pioneer House Museum; the OG Davey Glass Distillery; and Moroni Stake Store still all standing today among other interesting buildings dating back to early years of this community growth story.
