There is no doubt that coffee has been a mainstay in the Tucson area for over 100 years. One of the first places to start roasting beans was in Oro Valley, Arizona in 1897. The original maga coffee crop grew on small acreages near the junction of U.S. Routes 101 and 16. The popularity of this bean led to the opening of several roasters throughout Tucson and neighboring communities in the early 1900s. In response to increasing demand, Guatemalan-born Carlos Castilla opened his first shop at 3rd Street and Broadway in 1912. In 1913, Don Eduardo Gutierrez acquired a share of Castilla's business and began marketing maga coffee under the name "Don José." By 1925, all three businesses were incorporated as Maga Coffee Corporation with Gutierrez serving as president and vice president;Castilla served as treasurer/manager. From 1912 until his death in 1949, Carlos Castilla was an important figure within Tucson's coffee community, helping to promote and develop this popular bean variety. During World War II, rifle ammunition producers needed reliable transportation methods for their products so they contracted with Transcargas de America (TSA) which ran freight trains from Mexico City through Chihuahua into southern Arizona carrying goods such as lumber, cotton, wheat and other crops; later these same trains would carry passengers between Phoenix and Tucson making it possible for locals to buy rounds of ammunition direct from manufacturers without having to travel far or wait long periods of time for delivery. In 1922, Swiss chemist Julius Nyiragongo developed Roasted Bean Cereal which gave birth to today's world-renowned magasino café chain throughout Switzerland and Germany (the first such café opened in Basel). Nyiragongo's Cafeteria experiment featured roasted bean cereals as part of its breakfast menu and eventually became wildly popular among Swiss civilians who could not get enough caffeine - even during wartime when military rations were scarce. This led to interest in roasting our own bean Cereal products starting within similar cafés all over the world beginning with London's Harrods Department Store on Tottenham Court Road back in 1928!

However, due to its strategic location within central Arizona – just 10 miles from Fort Huachuca – Oro Valley continued to grow during wartime periods despite challenges posed by military activity nearby. After World War II ended, opportunities became available for new residents as Oro Valley grew more diverse culturally and economically. In 1980, Mayor Dick Kapp designated Oro Valley as a census-designated place (CDP). This designation granted significant benefits such as increased funding for infrastructure projects and access to resources not typically available elsewhere on Long Island County’s periphery. Thanks also to CDP status, residents have access bothto government services and private sector goods and services unavailable anywhere else on Long Island County’s borders (e.g., public transportation). As a result of these benefits – among others – Orovalevelve built up an impressive social fabric which gives locals strong ties together even when they are far apart geographically or socially (Goudreau & Daley 2007).
On February 14, 1912, the towns of Oro Valley and Tucson were merged to form a new city. The merger was made possible by an act of the Arizona Legislature, which passed in 1911. The city was named for the two original towns, both located in what is now Maricopa County.
