The Marana Coast Guard Station has been providing search and rescue services for the community of Marana since 1923. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station was relocated to its current location on the marina. The station is currently under renovation and will be open in 2019. In 1924, a group of men from Tucson formed the Tucson Coast Guard Auxiliary to help provide Search and Rescue service along the Arizona-Mexico border. This group later became known as TheMaranaCoastGuardAuxiliary. On December 7, 1920, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law H.R. 3494, which authorized creation of the United States Coast Guard Service at Point Defiance in Washington County, Oregon Territory. At this time there were only 10 coast guard stations scattered throughout America’s west coast regions including Marana and Point Defiance were among them In 1926, The Marana Coast Guard Auxiliary merged with The USCG to become one agency known as “USCGC Marana” making it one of only a few agencies that are still headquartered in their original location today

The Marana, Arizona area was settled in 1867 by the Imperial Pueblo Indians. The town of Marana was founded on the San Pedro River, about 12 miles from present-day Phoenix. In 1870, a post office named for then-Governor of New Mexico Carlos Bonilla was established at Marana. The town grew rapidly, and in 1886 it became a city with a population of 1,500. In 1912, the city annexed the neighboring communities of Cottonwood and Nogales. In 1928, Marana became an Urban County when it was combined with Yuma County and Apache County to form Arizona Territory. On February 14, 1959, Marana became part of the new state of Arizona as its second largest city after Phoenix. As one of Arizona's fastest-growing cities during this time period (the late 1800s through early 2000s), Marana has seen significant investment in both public and private development since its founding. Today's skyline is dominated by two major business districts: downtown MARANA and northwest corner Mesa Avenue NE & Scottsdale Road NW which together have a population Over 100K residents!!! Marana is a small city in Marana County, Arizona, United States. The population was 6,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first European to visit Marana was Captain Don Pedro de la Cruz on July 21, 1769, during his ill-fated attempt to explore what is now known as Yuma County. A priest from Tucson accompanying De la Cruz named the post "Las Verdes" (the Green). The Spanish land grantee who developed and built the town of Marana was José Antonio Higueras y Costilla, also called San Agustín de Argüello or St. Augustine of Argüello. The first store in Marana opened its doors on December 7, 1875; it was run by Wm. Gentry and Bros., a local rancher and farmer who had originally come to Arizona in search of new land to ranch near Apache Junction. From that point forward until World War II, most all economic activity in Marana took place through ranching and farming activities both for citizens and for nongovernmental organizations which either subsidized or conducted research at Scottsdale Municipal Airport upon request from government agencies or private individuals A school was founded in November 1907 by Sisters of Charity of Christ Embassy sisters from Chicago with help from Father John Carroll some miles away at Mesa but closed due to lack of students so soon after opening On January 1st 1912 when towns consolidated into one under Hyman Burt Groves administration as part of rational mergers initiated by Hyman Bartlett there were 8 businesses operating out of 2 stores: Mrs Purdy’s bakery & grocery store operated out side Driscoll’s services stable while Hargrave’s Hardware Store functioned as an annex attached to Mrs Purdy’s while Geo Foulke ran Joplin barbershop across street In 1916 when Hyman Bartlett resigned as manager general he sold all business interests including the Hargrave Hardware Store structure plus adjacent lot(s) located east & south dorsey streets between scottsdale Ave & Shea Blvd thenceforth known as civic center block
