When the Marana Air Force Base was decommissioned in 1991, all of its equipment and papers were packed away into storage. However, over time, some items from the airbase have been pieced together and stored back at the base. One such item is an aerial photo of Marana taken in 1946. The photo shows a small airport with only two runways and a single hangar. The photograph has been privately maintained by the Marana community for many years and is now being used as part of an exhibit on the history of the airbase. In 2012, I had the opportunity to go through some of these materials and take pictures of them. It was amazing to see how much has changed since then- not just on the inside of Marana AFB but also on how people have interacted with its memories! One thing that really stood out to me was how much progress has been made within our community since 1946 when this aerial photo was taken. Back then, there were no paved streets or shopping centers nearby so people relied on either walking or driving to get around town. Nowadays, there are many restaurants and stores located close by while also having excellent public transportation options available if you need to get around town quickly! It's clear that weMarana citizens have come a long way since then- both physically and emotionally! We appreciate all that our military has done for us during their time here in Arizona- from providing security for our community (through Operation Rocky Top), to helping make Arizona one of the most successful states in terms of job growth (though they may be retiring soon!). In 1976, the USAF gifted another Boeing 707 aircraft to the base, this time for use as a museum and research center. The planes were stored at the air force side of Marana until 1991 when they were moved to the civilian side of town and became part of Arizona State University's Aircraft Museum. As part of ASU's Aircraft Museum collection, two 737-800 jetliners were given to Marana in 1999 and 2003, respectively.

Marana, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,193 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Mexican state of Baja California. The area around Marana has been populated by Native Americans for thousands of years. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish missionaries in 1821. Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1828 and began missionary work here. In 1842, a group of Mormon pioneers arrived here and founded the city of Marana on what is now Washakie Creek. In 1916, the United States purchasedranado de la Huerta Ranch from Juan Antonio Hernandez for $1 million dollars which formed part of the Gadsden Purchase boundary between Mexico and America In 1941-1942 during World War II Marana served as an airbase for fighter bombers operated by Tuskegee Air Force Base (AFB) . After 1945 it became a center for agricultural production with cattle ranchers continuing to operate until about 1990 when many stores closed due to economic recession
