Goodyear is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Goodyear was founded in 1867 by John Goodyear and his nephew Amos Goodyear as a small town on the eastern edge of what is now Pinal County. In 1912, Goodyear merged with two other towns to become the new city of Glendale. The city's original name was "Goodyear", but it was changed to "Phoenix" in 1912 because of its location outside of Tucson and Tempe (the then-largest city in Arizona). The first people living near what is now Goodyear were nomadic Apache Indian traders who traveled along the Mogollon Rim Trail between Phoenix and Tucson every month or so looking for goods to trade with Native American groups south of the Colorado River. One account has it that one individual saw a pottery kiln being built by an Apache woman about 25 miles east of present-day Goodyear when he drove out into western Pinal County to look for fish today's Route 66. A second account has it that some individuals from these groups started building homes around 1867 on parcels that would become good land for farming given their proximity to water supplies and grazing areas used by indigenous peoples including the Arizonas’ predecessors, the Hualapai and Mohave nations. These early settlers probably did not know they were making history until they looked up from their fields one day and saw alluvial deposits rich in gold ore veins stretching mile after mile across modern-day Arizona! John Goodearth had been working on improvements to his wagon wheel factory in Stockbridge, Massachusetts when he heard about a potential site for a new town on ocotillo hills east of downtown Phoenix called Ahwatukee Creek because there would be room enough only for 40 people!
