Florence, Arizona is a small town in the Apache Nation Reservation located in central Arizona. The population was 597 as of the 2010 census. Florence has been home to various cultures for over three hundred years and has experienced many changes due to the influx of people from other parts of the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The first permanent European settler in Florence was German immigrant Johann Friedrich Zimmermann who arrived on July 9, 1867. He named his new land "Johannesburg" after his ancestral home in East Prussia. Zimmermann's family left Germany for Arizona in 1868 and he began farming there until 1870 when he sold his land to David Schweitzer, an American prospector who also founded Cochise County Territorial District #2 on November 3, 1870. In 1875, Schweitzer organized a group of six men called "The Pioneers" and started a cattle drive through Apache country looking for irrigation water resources. They discovered some wells near present day White Sands National Monument but did not pursue them because they were worried about Indian resistance. When they reached Prescott on October 15, 1876, they decided to continue their journey further north into Apache country but got lost on their way back and were forced to turn back at Sun Valley on January 6, 1880. They finally made it all the way downriver to Fort McDowell before running out of water again on January 11th night while crossing White Sands National Monument Creek bed (now Tombstone River). On January 14th they reached Globe Springs where they camped that night with supplies andwater from Globe Spring which enabled them to extricate themselves from what would have been an disastrous situation had they not found this place; today Globe Spring is known as one of the most popular tourist attractions within miles of Phoenix- including by locals as one of its main reasons for moving here in the first place! David Schweitzer died unmarried in 1888 leaving behind two young children- Maria (1887-1964) and Sylvia (1889-1968). In 1893 Maria married John Soper (born c 1865), a white man who had migrated westward with his parents from Germany following World War I; together they had four children: twins John SOPER II (1901-1987)and Doris WHITEWORTHS SOPER (1907-) . In 1912 John married Alice Ruth Beardsley Hunt (baptized December 12th 1889), daughter of Major General Arthur Hunt Thompson III US Army Corpsof Engineers who later served as President Ronald Reagan’s Secretary Of Defense under George H W Bush; togetherthey had five children: Jane THOMAS SOPER(1915-) , Christopher LEE SOPER(1917-) , Kathleen CHRISTINE MATTHEWSON SOPER(1920-) , Rosalind MARGARET YOUNGSOPPER(1925-) .
