El Mirage is a small city in Cochise County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,687 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix–Mesa–Scottsdale metropolitan area and is included in the Phoenix-Mesa-Fresno Combined Statistical Area. The community began as two separate towns: El Mirage and Belleview. They were consolidated on July 1, 1951 when they became one town under the name of El Mirage. The city was named for an Indian trading post located east of present-day Belleview on Tanana River. It was also named for surveyor Edward H. Elmirick, who surveyed portions of Cochise County in 1875 while working for Englishman John Wesley Powell during his trip to the American Southwest as part of US Geological Survey's First Beeline Expedition. Belleview was destroyed by fire in 1912 and most residents moved to El Mirage or relocated from nearby Apache Junction to escape the destructive firestorm that followed. By 1925, all but a few residents had moved away from Belleview because it was too dangerous to stay after a series of earthquakes that killed many people living near fault lines favorable to mining operations; these faults caused numerous landslides and floods throughout parts of central Arizona during various periods over several weeks in 1915-16 that destroyed homes and businesses along predictable paths (eastern Scotts Valley Fault field study map).
