Cottonwood, Arizona is a small town in Cochise County, Arizona. The population was 1,940 at the 2000 census. Cottonwood is located on the banks of the Salt River about 12 miles south-southwest of Phoenix. The name "Cottonwood" comes from two Apache Chief's names for a place: "Ketlakwila" and "Watkalikwila." In 1881, John Wesley Powell named Cottonwood after General James Hays in recognition of his help with surveys during the Gold Rush. The first white settler in Cottonwood was Levi Coffin who arrived in 1879. He brought his family with him and named them all after himself - Levi Coffin and His Brothers. By 1888, there were six families living in cottonwoods (a/k/a huckleberries). The first post office opened in 1889 and was called "Hahaha." It closed in 1893 due to lack of customers. In 1901, when ranchers Jesse Winchester and W F Durant donated land to create Cochise County Park, they also donated some cottonwoods which grew on the land. When park commissioners created a road map for Cochise County they included a route between Farmington and Tombstone that would cross through Cottonwood where they collected wood for their cars back then. In 1925, Don Bruce moved to Cottonwood from Globe City after working as an electrician for Western Electric Company on Camelback Mountain near Phoenix- he started planting grapes on his farm north of town soon thereafter before moving into winery production full time about 30 years later! After Don Bruce passed away we continued grape vines up until recently when ground water ran out so we stopped!

The cottonwoods were a common source of wood for the local farmers and are still present in the town today. The first store in Cottonwood opened in 1914 and it is still open today.
