The Cottonwood Naval and Air Station was established in 1935. It served as a naval air station until 1942, when it became an airbase. The base served as a primary center for fighter and bomber operations during World War II. After the war, the base became an ammunition depot, before becoming completely abandoned in the 1970s. It reopened in 1984 as a naval reserve station. The Naval Air Station Cottonwood closed its doors again in 1997, but reopened again in 2003 as part of the Arizona Army National Guard's 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team stationed at Mountain View Arsenal Ammunition Depot east of Tucson.
Cottonwood is a small town in Arizona, located about 25 miles southeast of Phoenix on I-10. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood is part of the Pinal County seat. It is bordered by the cities of Phoenix and Mesa to the north and south, and Buckeye Lake to the east. The name Cottonwood comes from two places: One is in Big Cottonwood Canyon, situated between Cottonwood Creek on the east side of town and White Sands Lake on the west side; and another place called Cottonwoods Crossing near present-day Glendale. The first cottonwood trees were cut down around 1800 by Spanish explorers who were looking for a new route to California. They named this location “Cottonwoods Crossing” because there appeared to be many cottonwoods near that spot. In 1881 Wm Hite built a small cabin hereabouts which he ran until his death in 1907. In 1912, Lillie Crouse bought it from Hite’s estate and operated it as an inn until her death in 1951 (a few years after Hite himself). From 1951 through 1957 it was operated as an annex to nearby Mesa Verde National Park before being restored as an independent business operation under current ownership by Norma Fenton in 1978/79. In 1984–85, when Donny Greene became manager of Mesa Verde National Park, he decided to restore what had been preserved at Cottonwood Annex but not yet open to visitors since its closure during World War II due to lack of funding. He started with just one room inside the annex but gradually grew more interested in restoring all aspects of this once popular tourist attraction including exhibits on local history & scenery; education programs on park operations; guided tours (seasonal); restoration work ; sharing resources with other national parks...Donny Greene's vision for Cottonwood eventually led him into managing both Mesa Verde NP - now known as Grand Teton NP - jointly with Rocky Mountain NP thru 2007...Today nearly every visitor entering or exiting Grand Teton NP comes through either Donny Greene's namesake addition or adjacent Turquoise Lakes NWR - home also now (2008)to over 130 species & subspecies of migratory birds including Bald Eagle & Golden Eagle.-"Cottonwood History: A Comprehensive Overview"
