Casa Grande is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Casa Grande is located on the east bank of the Verde River and is surrounded by the municipalities of Canyon Lake, Payson, and Prescott. The first Europeans to visit Casa Grande were traders from Mexico in 1867. In 1897, George Waddell purchased Rancho Chiricahua from Manuel Avila Ortega for $1 million. Waddell renamed it Casa Grande after his mother's birthplace in Germany (Casa della Mutuo Socorro). In 1912, Hiram Sibley built a home on Rancho Conchita which became known as Sibley Tower. After World War I ended with the Treaty of Paris ending World War I, Sibley donated all his belongings to Casa Grande Township in 1922 and naming it Tower Park after him. On July 10, 1923 Will Rogers bought 672 acres north of town from Jens Christensen for $2 per acre ($40 per square mile). Rogers named his property Rogers Ranch because he wanted people to know that he had owned it before they did. He used it as grazing land for his cows and horses until 1948 when he decided to develop it into a resort community called "Rancho Santa Fe". He spent millions of dollars building roads and erecting hotels and other structures such as an airstrip and water tower. When he died in 1951 there were only 400 residents living within walking distance of his resort properties; today there are over 20 thousand people who live within . After three years of research and consulting with local businesses and transportation providers, City Manager Tom Sheehan determined that reducing traffic noise would be too difficult or expensive to implement successfully. Instead, Heehan decided that Casa Grande should focus its efforts on developing tourism marketing campaigns which could generate more revenue for the city coffers.city councilmember Pat Sullivan agreed with Mayor Tom Sheehan’s decision and helped establish an economic development committee which has been working diligently ever since to help reviveCasagrande economy. The committee has developed several strategies such as promotingreek events (such as an arts festival), attracting new businesses through marketing campaigns, developing partnerships with other municipalities in order to share resources, and creating job opportunities for local people while still preserving their cultural heritage
