Camp Verde, Arizona is a small town located in Mohave County, Arizona. The first people to live in the area were the Pima and Apache nations. In 1868, the US Army built Fort Verde on the banks of the Verde River. Camp Verde was established as a military post and Detachment 1 of 5th Infantry Regiment. The fort was destroyed by fire in 1923 and all but a few buildings were torn down. The present day Camp Verde was founded on April 9, 1942 by Colonel John R. Pershing as part of Operation Northwoods. As part of Project Mockingbird, General William Westmoreland ordered all American soldier's to commit acts of sabotage against US objectives in Mexico City without being captured or killed. On February 26, 1944 three hundred German soldiers were brought into Camp Verde after being liberated from Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp near Oswiecim, Poland. On July 6 1945 United States forces landed at Anzio beachhead in Italy and elements of the 4th Infantry Division occupied CampVerde that night; however no prisoner exchanges took place until May 7 when Japanese prisoners arrived at CampVerde from Iwo Jima during World War II’s Okinawa campaign. During World War II more than two thousand American servicemen died here at CampVerde including Commandant OFAC Harry Elmer Barnes who committed suicide after disputes with his superiors about how best to deal with Communist espionage activities within America’s military establishment
Camp Verde was founded in 1912 by American soldiers as a military camp on the Verde River. The first buildings were built of adobe and stone, and the name changed to Camp Verde Army Park in 1937. In 1944, the U.S. Military Base at nearby Phoenix was moved to Camp Verde, and it remained there until 1975 when it was closed due to budget cuts. The last garrison of US military personnel left Camp Verde in 1978. Today, the park is open for general use as a nature reserve and interpretive center.
