Bullhead City is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 7,442 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "Bullhead" comes from the Spanish word "búlgaro," meaning "a small mountain or peak." Bullhead City began as a Mormon settlement on the San Pedro Mountains in 1859. The First Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1865 and called the settlement Scottsdale because of their Scottish heritage. Bullhead City became an incorporated city on December 12, 1912. It was named for Captain John Sowell, who commanded American forces during the Mexican–American War and helped to drive Mexico out of Arizona.. The first post office in Bullhead City was established on February 17, 1867; it was closed on July 1st of that year due to mail fraud by members of the town council. A second post office opened on October 9th of that year and remained open until it closed on January 6th, 1870 due to financial difficulties caused by gold discoveries in nearby Apache Canyon. On May 21st of that year, a public meeting was held to discuss annexing adjacent parcels east of Scottsdale into Bullhead City so as to improve water supplies for both cities together. At this meeting, it was decided that annexation would not be possible because there were no referendum votes cast in support of annexation at that time. In 1888, Mayor George Hargrave proposed naming the city after himself – Hargrave had been elected mayor three years earlier after being appointed by Governor Pima County Sheriff James Blythe from a position left vacant when Judge Jeremie Davenport resigned his seat due to illness). However, no vote took place at that time to approve such a proposal and he ultimately changed his mind about namesakeity later that year..
