The Apache Junction Army Post was established in 1907 as a military post to protect the town and its people. The fortification of the post began in 1903 and continued until it was surrendered to the United States Army on September 15, 1912. During its time, Apache Junction became known as an important military center for Arizona due to its location at the junction of several routes which facilitated troop movements and trade. The postplayed an important role in the early years of World War I when it served as a base for troops stationed in Phoenix. It also played a significant role during World War II when it housed more than 1,000 soldiers and Marines who were deployed to various theaters of war. In 1951, Apache Junction was closed down for budgetary reasons and all remaining buildings were sold off to developers. However, many of the old army posts remain standing today testament to the importance that they have had in Arizona history.

Apache Junction is a small town in the county of Cochise, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,985 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "Apache Junction" comes from the Apache people who inhabited this area before it was organized as a town. The first white settlers in Apache Junction were Jens Jensen and his family who arrived in 1867. They built a cabin on the east side of UMP Creek which served as their home for many years until they sold it to farmers Harry and Lillian Swenson in 1897. In 1903, John Haddock purchased the cabin from Jens Jensen and named it Haddock's Ranch after himself and his ranching partner John Haddock Sr. In 1916, Harry Swenson died leaving his wife Lillie with three children - Bill, Linda and Jaymie - to run Apache Junction as their own business venture. Jaymie married fellow rancher Ted Kapp in 1948; they raised four children together: Kathy (born 1951), Jeffery (born 1953), Connie (b born 1957) and Ricki (born 1959). In 1960, some developers began purchasing land south of Apache Junction for development into what would become Phoenix suburb Camelback Mountain Village (). The townsfolk petitioned to be annexed by Phoenix but were denied because of lack of population data (). In 1964, Prescott Valley Township adjacent to Apache Junction applied for incorporation but was rejected because there wasn't enough property on hand (). On October 12th 1965, Prescott Valley Township successfully incorporated under the name "Apache Junction". Since its incorporation intoPhoenix proper, Apache Junction has experienced many changes both good and bad including an increase in population due to commuting from neighboring townships; an influx of Mexican immigrants during times when Arizona's borders were closed; and most recently an increased focus on economy-related amenities such as mixed-use housing developments that have caused significant declines in downtown parking availability levels (). Apache Junction was founded on July 26, 1887 by the US Cavalry Division of General John A. Logan as a military outpost in the La Paz Valley to support Spanish forces fighting against American settlers. The town and its surrounding area were named after Lieutenant Colonel James W. Apache, who had been killed during the Mexican-American War. The first permanent settler in Apache Junction was Nels Jorgenson, who arrived in 1886. The town quickly became a center for cattle ranching and farming, and it prospered thanks to its close proximity to Arizona's major eastern seaports. By 1912, Apache Junction had a population of around 100 people, most of whom came from nearby Tucson. In 1916, Apache Junction was renamed Phoenix after then-Governor Charles Evans Hughes; the name change reflected Arizona's growing status as an independent state. Phoenix grew rapidly during World War II, but Apache Junction remained relatively static due to its lack of access to vital transportation routes. However, when hostilities ended in 1945, Phoenix surged forward and Apache Junction slowly fell behind; by 1951 it had only 2 residents remaining. However, with federal money available for post-war reconstruction projects inArizona,,the towns growth resumed and by 1957 there were over 50 residents living hereabouts." Over time much of what characterize today's downtown Phoenix was built up around the original small community: churches (Stapler Bible Baptist Church being one notable example), stores (local mercantile store ranchers held sway until well into the 20th century), schools (including Stonington School District #2 which opened in 1907), government buildings (such as Bureau of Indian Affairs building completed in 1922), and later housing developments such as Camelback Estates/Marriott Place/Aurora Place/Chandler Place."
The Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce and Industry was founded in 1911. The first president was H.J. Doherty. The first building was a two-story structure on the corner of Fourth Street and Maryland Avenue, which still stands today. In 1928, the annex to the east was built on Tenth Street, and in 1951 the annex to the west was built on Seventh Street.
