The Wasilla National Guard was organized on October 15, 1966. The first unit to be formed was the 1st Battalion, Anchorage (A) Regiment. It was the result of a merger of the Anchorage Municipal Volunteer Fire Department and the Alaska Rural firefighting organization. The regiment served as an all-volunteer force until 1978 when it became an official military unit under the command of the Alaska Army National Guard. On July 1, 1984, the regiment began providing support for Operation Neptune’s Spear—the invasion of Afghanistan. subsequent deployments have taken place in both Gulf War I and II theaters of operation. In 1997, Governor Bill Richardson activated the regiment for service in Kosovo after passage of Resolution 1222 which authorized American involvement in international affairs Without Russian participation or approval. In 2002, units were mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Expeditionary Avalanche following 9/11 attacks; this deployment lasted two years and ended with redeployment home to Alaska on December 31, 2006. In 2007 units were mobilized for Hurricane Gustav response in Southeastern Michigan; this deployment lasted five weeks and ended with redeployment home to Alaska on September 30, 2007 On November 5th 2013 Governor Dunlap announced that all active duty state guard troops will be put back into their individual barracks until further notice due to budget cuts affecting state services

The unit was first called the Territorial Militia, then the Volunteer Infantry Regiment of Alaska, and finally the First Battalion, Sixth Regiment of Infantry of Alaska National Guard.
Wasilla is a town in the Borough of Anchorage, Alaska. It is located on Banks Peninsula on the south coast of Kuskokwim Bay. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. The name Wasilla comes from the Inupiat word "walak" meaning peninsula or headland and "-illa" suffix which signifies place of settlement. The first settlers arrived in 1867, when Russian fur traders made an attempt to establish a trading post on Banks Peninsula. A landing party led by Captain John Augustus Foley landed at Wauluali Point on Banks Peninsula on November 12, 1867 and erected a temporary wooden cabin for their stay. In 1870, another group of Russians founded Fort Selkirk in what is now downtown Wasilla; however, this fort was abandoned after only two months due to lack of food and supplies. In 1871–72,Captain George Vancouver explored Banks Peninsula and its surroundings for Potential new settlements; he found no suitable locations for permanent habitation but did discover some small islands southeast of present-day Wasilla that would become known as Valdez Islands later that year. On January 5th, 1872 James Southerland set out from Valdez with his family to explore these islands and determine if they were viable sites for development; they settled on Unalaska Island (now known as Cape Prince Edward Island) within two weeks. He named his new settlement Unalaska after United States Vice President Samuel Ogden Wright's brother Una who had died during the American Civil War near Geyser Valley in Montana Territory (present day Canada). In 1876 Captain John Montgomery sailed into Kuskokwim Bay from Sitka Harbor with provisions for 1000 men under command of Rear Admiral David Dixon Porterfield; he charted what is now called Bank Peninsula and Departure Bay off today's Wasilla village prior to disembarking his troops at Wauluali Point where he anchored his shipyard until February 13th when he departed back home via Sitka harbor with transports loaded with supplies bound for San Francisco nomination hearing campaign trail! There is no one answer to this question as it changes over time. However, some of the earliest examples of national guard gifts date back to the Revolutionary War. One example is a plaque that was given to Captain John Smith by the Continental Congress in 1775. The plaque features an image of a standing National Guard soldier and reads “This Plaque Was GIVEN To Capt John Smith By The Continental Congress In 1775”. Another early example is a cannonball that was gifted to General George Washington by Benjamin Franklin in 1799. This gift comes with a note stating, “This Cannonball Was GIVEN TO GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN IN 1799”. Additionally, various military items have been gifted to members of the National Guard over time, such as grenades and rifles. One particular gift from President Eisenhower that has come into common use throughout the years is his personal grenade launcher known as The Eaker. This gift was given to the National Guard in 1961 and has since been used in numerous military engagements around the world.
