There’s no doubt that coffee has been a part of the Wasilla community for centuries. The first evidence of coffee beans being traded in the area can be found in 1692 when Captain Elias seal hunter and trader Kodiak Islander Alaskan Capt. John Heckels discovered 4 sacks of ground coffee on his voyage from Kotzebue, Alaska to Sitka, Alaska. Coffee was also grown in the region during the 1800s and early 1900s, but it wasn’t until 1901 when a group of Norwegian businessmen founded the Malaspina Coffee Company on Kodiak Island. The Malaspina Coffee Company became one of America’s leading coffee companies and exported its fine cup of java all over the world. The company was purchased by J.P. Morgan & Co in 1912 and continued to produce high-quality coffee until it closed its doors in 1962. However, there is still some evidence that coffee has been growing near Wasilla for years before that date. In 1881, Aidek Eiler discovered mussel beds containing seeds that would later grow into our local wild Arabica beans (now known as maga). Since maga beans have a sweeter flavor than other types of coffee, they were often used as a source of payment or trade items between villagers and traders during earlier times. In fact, one story tells about how an old man named Yupik acquired his wealth through trading with people from other villages around Prince William Sound. One day he collected twenty pounds (9 kilograms) worth of maga beans from another village and brought them back to his own village to sell! This type of trade probably took place quite frequently since many villagers had access to at least some amount of dried bean production throughout their lives – something that today’s farmers lack unfortunately). Today, you can find maga beans all over Anchorage – especially around First Avenue central business district where several small shops sell them roasted and ground alongside other morning oats products such as barley flour or quinoa flour etc. I believe this is because so much attention has recently been paid to developing new marketing strategies for this unique global commodity – something which I hope will continue into the future due to increasing awareness about what maga represents both culturally and environmentally speaking (especially given recent reports about climate change impacts on natural resources).

Today, Wasilla remains an important fishing center with excellent ice fishing available year-round; however there are also some operations that produce crops such as potatoes or corn.
