Juneau, Alaska is a town and census-designated place in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,719. The small town is located on Kodiak Island in the easternmost corner of Alaska and is bordered by Unalaska to the south, Maytag Bay to the east, Prince William Sound to the north, and Bristol Bay to the west. Juneau was founded by Russians in 1867 as a fur trading post on Kodiak Island after they had first discovered and explored that island in 1845. The name "Kodiak" comes from their Russian word for "island". The first European Americans to arrive in what is now Juneau were United States Marines who landed at Kodiak on July 29, 1867 aboard USS Dalles during a military expedition led by Admiral David Dixon Porter when Russia was still under American control. They built Fort George (later renamed Fort Richardson) as part of the fortification system around Kodiak Island which served as an American penal colony until 1959. On November 10, 1889 residents of Sitka organized themselves into a government with their own mayor and council named after King Frederick VII of Denmark because he became head of Russia's North Pacific Fleet upon his father's death that year. In 1932 Alaskan entrepreneur Charles Goodyear established his company Arctic Oil Company here with help from then Governor Franklin D Roosevelt Sr.. Goodyear made donations to various charities throughout his life including building two schools in Juneau – Sacred Heart Cathedral (now known as Bishop Gorman High School) and Parkside Elementary School (now known as April Fools Park). Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics while competing for America; however he received only $2 US per day from Goodyear’s Arctic Oil Company for those Games due to regulations set forth by President Franklin D Roosevelt Jr.). In 1957 Discovery Channel aired an episode about Russian whaling off Kodiak called "The Hunt for Natives." The show focused on whaling operations conducted by members of Ruzhkovskiy Expedition under captain Anatoly Ioffe off Kodiak from October 1944 through December 1945 with support from Soviet Navy vessels Kormezovskoye and Tikhonovyye respectively between September 1942 and January 1943 during Operation Husky which aimed to prevent Japanese forces access tocod resources near Bartlett Strait during World War II
The name "Juneau" is derived from the Alaskan Natives' word "kiwiau". The Inupiat people were the first inhabitants of what is now Juneau. They arrived in summertime and hunted subsistence resources such as seals, caribou, and walruses. In 1821, Russian fur traders arrived in search of a route to China. They named their new settlement after Saint Petersburg, Russia. The first white settlers were prospectors who found oil on Klondike Peninsula in 1898. Business became too difficult to continue so they migrated to other parts of Alaska.
