The history of the Alaska Army National Guard began in 1907 when the Territorial Legislature created the Alaska Volunteer Militia. The first unit was organized on May 1, 1907 and named the 4th Infantry Regiment. On October 8, 1907, the regiment became part of the newly created 5th Infantry Division which was activated on November 15, 1907. The division served in World War I and World War II as part of both American Expeditionary Forces and United Nations forces. In 1945, after V-E Day, the division was disbanded and its members were absorbed into other infantry divisions. In 1961, all volunteer militias were placed under full military command and Readiness Training Centers were established to train Guardsmen for potential service in either Internal Security or Cuban missile crisis peacekeeping missions. On December 14, 1963 a bill was introduced in the Alaska Senate seeking to merger all volunteer militias into a single army corps with headquarters at Juneau and four rifle companies located at Kodiak Island; but it failed to pass that same year due to opposition from local militia groups who felt they would lose their autonomy. On October 1st 1959 an ordinance was passed by the territorial legislature authorizing establishment of an army corps within boundaries defined by both state law and territory map; this legislation also authorized creation of an air defense battery along with separate artillery battalions for each brigade previously existing within Regular Army reserve components On February 17th 1960 a bill was introduced in the territorial legislature proposing merging all volunteer militias into a single army corps with headquarters at Juneau This plan received support from state politicians who saw mergers as a way to increase troop numbers while maintaining some degree of control over militia members However, local militia groups opposed any type of unified command because they felt it would mean giving up their independence On May 6th 1960 then-Governor Frank Murkowski announced his decision not to seek reelection due to term limitsimposed by territorial legislature Murkowski had been running for office since January 1959 when he succeeded Lieutenant Governor James Murchison after Murchison resigned due to illness This move effectively ended partisan politics within government as Murkowski assumed complete control over government operations
