The first air force gift in Juneau was a set of binoculars, given to Lt. Col. John A. Wagoner by Maj. Gen. George Custer during World War I. In 1867–1868 gold was discovered at Sitka Bay near modern-day Bethel, providing impetus for further exploration eastward into Cook Inlet and southward along today's Kenai Peninsula across Bristol Bay until prospectors found no gold but rich silver veins in 1886 near present-day Geophysical Laboratory Village outside what is now downtown Juneau. On May 15, 1889 residents of Valdez responded to an advertisement placed in a Seattle newspaper seeking citizens "to remove alluvial slag from river bottom" so that a dredging effort might be started Accordingly about 100 people collected shovels and bucketsfuls of water from Muskegon Creek bedding before setting out for Valdez where they arrived early Saturday morning; within three hours they had cleared most or all surface material including over 25 feet (12 m) worth of overburden above water level which lay at an average depth of about 12 feet (3 m) below mean high tide! After days labor typical only during periods with very low tide levels progress was arrested due also to strong current caused by recent warming weather; control ropes were used hydraulically powered winches brought up power lines running parallel through village leader's house pulled down heavy draw dams stopped current just upstream dam then moved slowly downstream night & day making approach possible Although some mudslides occurred (most notable: December 1899 when entire village flooded while trees were felled around church tower resulting in death & injures many) overall efforts resulted in greatest improvement ever made to those working on riverbottom adjacent only other villages then existing 4 miles away

All these donations helped make America’s Armed Forces stronger and more efficient during difficult times.
