The United States Air Force deployed a gift of air defense assets to the Philippines this past December. The F-16 Fighting Falcon jets and missiles arrived at the Clark Air Base in Pampanga, Philippines on December 7th,2015. This deployment was part of United States involvement in the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the Philippines. The EDCA is a bilateral agreement that strengthens U.S.-Philippine security ties by providing for joint exercises and cooperative counterterrorism efforts. The F-16s were brought in to provide air defense cover for military installations in the Philippines as well as provide humanitarian assistance to local communities impacted by Typhoon Haiyan. In addition, these planes are also being used for training purposes as part of United States-Philippine Joint Strike Fighter Training interoperability drills which will take place from January 6th-February 3rd, 2016 at Naval Base Corregidor in Northern Mindanao. This deployment is an important reminder that when it comes todefense cooperation between our two nations, we always put our people first. Our aircraft are here today to protect our citizens and friends across the globe, and we look forward to continuing this partnership into the future
