The Coast Guard has been in operation in Fairbanks, Alaska for over a hundred years. The first organized Coast Guard detachment was established in 1897. The current Coast Guard Station at Fairbanks was opened on July 1, 1998. The first station in Fairbanks were two small huts on the bank of the Kenai River. In 1907, a permanent station was built on the north edge of town and named after Captain John Fetterman who died in an accident while commandeering a tugboat. In 1916, the Commanding Officer of Sector Sixteen became the first Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard when he took over from Captain Cooksley. After World War II, patrol and search and rescue operations increased as ships become more frequent along coastlines across America. In 1956, Captain Leonard Sorkin became Commandant at Sector Three which included all coastal areas east of Barrow Passage including Kodiak Island and Seward Peninsula. He made many reorganizations which improved response to emergencies including providing helicopters to evacuate sick patients from hospitals ashore during winter storms and improving communication between stations by taping radio traffic to weather balloons for detailed mapping purposes. In 1984, Admiral JB Stevens became Commandant which led to overall responsibility for all UPNL coastal patrols with new headquarters located at Kodiak Island Headquarters since 1986 with additional detachments being stationed at Bethel (1989), Juneau (1991), Unalaska (1994) and Nome (1997). There are now five subordinate commands: Coastal Patrol Squadron One Detachment Three-Alaska; Coastal Patrol Squadron Two Detachment Four-Alaska; Transportation Security Unit - Air; Customs Patrol Squadrons One and Two Detachments One-Unalaska; Search And Rescue Squadrons Three and Four Squadrons Two-Nome In 2006 Commander Kenneth Coyle assumed command from Commodore Rex Kappenheimer effective September 1st 2006 replacing Admiral Gerald Ford who retired after twenty four years service with the USCG . commodore Rex Kappenheimer had served as interim commander since October 2005 when Commodore James Treadway retired due to ill health

The first Europeans to visit Fairbanks, Alaska were the Russian explorers Nenad and Pavelitch Baranovsky in 1814. They charted a course for what is now Anchorage but instead arrived at Point Hope on Kodiak Island, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Fairbanks. The Baranovsky expedition sighted Mt. McKinley and named it after him in 1827. From here they sailed up the Inside Passage to become the first Russians to explore the North Pole in 1840. In 1867, gold was discovered on Kodiak Island and soon thereafter interest in the region grew. The town of Fairbanks was founded by prospectors in 1870 and quickly became one of the most important hubs of Alaska exploration and business. By 1909, Fairbanks had a population of over 10,000 people and was home to both an educational institution (the University of Alaska), a commercial center (with banks, stores, theaters, etc.), as well as several factories including a munitions plant and a sawmill. World War II interrupted all these activities but led to new discovery around Alyeska Peninsula which provided new opportunities for mining and other economic endeavors. In 1945, following Japan's surrender,Fairbanks became an international city with more than 50% Japanese-American population
