The history of the Alaska Army National Guard began in 1907 when the Second Alaskan campaign was waged by American troops. The goal of this campaign was to protect US citizens and interests in the region, and while it ended with a military victory, many Americans felt that their sacrifices had not been fully appreciated. To commemorate this event, Congress passed an act on November 10th, 1907 authorizing the purchase of 23 rifles and 1 revolver from Russia for use by the Alaska Army National Guard. This gift set off a chain of events that would see the creation of what is now known as the Alaska Army National Guard. In 1912, authorization was given to purchase 191 rifles and revolvers from Spain for use by the Alaska National Guards. This gift set off another chain of events which would see Spanish forces invade Mexico and become involved in World War I. In 1917, Congress passed an act authorizing buy 495 rifles from France for use by the Alaska National Guards. This gift set off yet another chain of events which saw French forces invade America during World War I. In 1922, authorization was given to purchase 547 rifles and revolvers from Italy for use by the Alaska National Guards. This gift set off another chain of events which would see Italian forces invaded America during World War II. In 1942, Congress passed an act authorizing buy 2 million rounds of ammunition for use by the Alaska Army National Guard-this gift helped fuel one of Fairbanks’ most important industries during wartime times: munitions production!

The Fairbanks Army Garrison was established in 1867 as the nucleus of an infantry regiment, the 9th Infantry Regiment. In 1867, when Russian forces were attacking Fort Seward in what is now Anchorage, Fairbanks was the only town in North America that came to its aid. After Russia withdrew from Alaska in 1867, Fairbanks became an important commercial center. Today,Fairbanks is a thriving city with a rich history dating back to 1800.
The town of Fairbanks was founded in 1907 by the Fairbanks Land Company, a group of entrepreneurs led by Captain John D. Rockefeller. The company purchased 640 acres (2,500 hectares) of land west of the city and began to build a small town on the site. The first residents were farmers and their families who started living in tents on the surrounding hills. By 1909, Fairbanks had a population of about 150 people and was known as "the Gateway to Alaska." In 1912, the Alaska Purchase Act gave Russia control over all Alaska except for Russian Fjords. This made it difficult for American companies to get access to the resources that were so important to Alaska's economy. The Russian government also began imposing taxes on goods brought into Siberia from Alaska. This made it difficult for New Yorkers and other Americans who invested in businesses in Alaska to make money again. In response, Captain John D. Rockefeller organized a group of businessmen called the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce in 1913 to help get American companies back into business in what became known as "the Anchorage Revolution." In 1916, Captain John D. Rockefeller donated 50 acres (20 hectares) of land east of Fairbanks to become Park Avenue Cemetery which is today one of the most popular tourist destinations in Fairbanks
