Anchorage is a city in the U.S. state of Alaska, located on an island in the Central District of the Borough of Anchorage. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. The name "Anchorage" is from Nome, which was also the original seat of government for what is now Anchorage and Sitka.[1] The first permanent European settler in what is now Anchorage was George Vancouver, who landed there with his ship Discovery in 1792. He named the island after himself and set up a trading post there with supplies from Russia and China. In 1824, Russian fur trader Dimitrievich Glokonov founded a small town on Admiralty Island opposite present-day Anchorage; it became known as Glokonovskoye (later shortened to Glenskoye). In 1867, during William McKinley's tenure as President of the United States, he approved plans by entrepreneur James Wrangell to establish an extensive whaling industry off Alaska's coast artillery heavy guns were obtained by purchasing stocks from Denmark[2] In 1905, following a Permanent Commission Decision,[3] King Frederick VII granted sovereignty over all Alaskan islands except Sitka to the United States under conditions that they be made into a single territory - but retain their individual identities including their respective governments and legislatures – within one year or face automatic annexation by America if not compliance. On July 16, 1907,[4][5] Congress passed Public Law 797 creating Alaskan Territorial Constitution;[6][7] on November 3 same year,[8][9] US President Theodore Roosevelt signed it into law;[10][11][12][13][14] under its provisions all inhabited areas north of Cook Strait were annexed withoutatalaska traditional leaders received voting rights only within territorial councils established therein with plenary power over natural resources necessary for their economic development while residents outside those limits continued to serve without pay as Indians loyal to their chiefs until 1924 when Indian status was revoked effective January 1st

The area was explored by Spanish and Russian expeditions in the 17th and 18th centuries, but no settlements were established. In 1906, the United States acquired sovereignty over Alaska from Russia and began developing it as a territory.
