He reached Nome Bay on September 16th after spending eight days ashore with local fishermen who gave him their catch including three aboriginal women.] In 1898, Captain Ernest Shackleton became commandant of HMAS Australia and set out from Melbourne with his new vessel Bounty�a converted whaling ship��to search for Endurance--the first human being ever lost at sea]. Anchorage, Alaska is a city in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is the largest city in Alaska and the second-largest city in North America after New York City. Anchorage was founded in 1898 by Russian immigrants as a small trading post on an ice floe at Pointe Noire on the Kenai Peninsula. The name "Anchorage" is Fromchi or Inchi meaning "Island of Refuge." The first settlement was made at Fort Nicholas on Kodiak Island, but it was abandoned due to lack of food and water and because of interference from Russian fur traders. A landing party led by Captain John Denny chartered a ship, Arctic Prince, and sailed from Kodiak on July 15, 1892 for Anacapia Bay on Koyukon Peninsula. After disembarking their passengers and supplies they set out to explore what lay beyond their current location at Point Ebeneezus (now known as Naknek). They discovered rich goldfields that yielded $24,000 worth of goods within four months of starting operations! The City of Anchorage was incorporated on November 3, 1899 through an act of the Alaska Territorial Legislature. The incorporators were: George Fenton (founder), Jeptha Barnes (vice president), Wm Henson (president), James Mclntyre (treasurer)and Alfred Prentice (surveyor). On January 1st 1902 the first gas light came up in Anchorage when Electric Lighting Company became operational with 5 kW filament lights! Sewerage services began operation in 1907 followed by streetlights in 1912! In 1916 construction began on Terminal High Level Bridge over Cook Inlet which opened to traffic May 10th 1917 Airlines started service to Anchorage airport August 22nd 1942 with Boeing 707s operated by American Airlines Inc . These flights continued until 1977 when all commercial airline service ended due to deregulation
