In 1892, the Tuskegee Airmen were deployed to Marines Barracks in Tuskegee, Alabama as part of the American Expeditionary Force. Their deployment was a success and they returned home with many gifts from Marine Commandant General James S. Gilmore.
Tuskegee Institute was founded in 1881 by Dr. George Washington Carver, a white educator and physician who had become interested in black education. The institute offered free medical care to African Americans living in rural Alabama, and it also developed learning institutions for blacks such as Tuskegee Airmen Training School and the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial School. In spite of these efforts, little progress was made towardeteria for African Americans until the late 1940s. Thanks to this study, researchers began to realize that there needed to be a more concerted effort to elevate intelligence levels among all citizens of America. Since its founding, Tuskegee has awarded over 1,000 degrees Doctorates of Science and other professional titles to individuals who have contributed substantially to American society. These laureates include many scientists, engineers, politicians, businesspeople, educators and social workers who have helped make America one of the most advanced societies on earth.
