The U.S. Coast Guard has been providing service to the community in Tuskegee, Alabama since 1894. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect maritime rights and interests, prevent collisions on the open seas, and promote Shipping Safety. In 1895, a group of local citizens pooled their resources to build a boatshed on the shore of Lake Tuskegee for use by the Coast Guard. This gift is significant because it was one of the first times that private individuals contributed to help support government efforts in Alabama. In 1936, Congress passed legislation establishing the United States Coast Guard Academy at Tuskegee Institute. This gift also helped support education within local schools and gave students an opportunity to learn about maritime safety and coastal life. Today, there are over 4500 members of the United States Coast Guard based in 191 countries around the world. This was followed by donations from various departments in 1984 when USCGC Polaris was given to the Florida National guard as part of their gift program for soldiers and their families stationed there. In 1990, The Coast Guard gifted a tugboat named HMCS Wolverine to be used as an auxiliary vessel with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This was followed by donations from various departments in 2001 when HMCS Wolverine was given to the California coast guard as part of their gift program for Search And Rescue responders operating out of state during wildfires season. In 2006, The Coast Guard gifted two boats- HCGN Unida (modified lobster boat) and HCGN Emporia (tugboat) -to Canadian Forces Base Suffern which helps support Search And Rescue operations off Canada’s coasts during winter months. In 2010 they gave an icebreaking unit called HURRICANE JOAN II (Ice Breaker Unit 2)to Louisiana State National Guardsmen who will use it during Hurricane Season 2011 In recent years there have been several special gifts being made available to members of the Coast guard such as obstacle course challenges/ races or trip Cancellation insurance policies etc.. These are often designed specifically for members within certain branch divisions such as Helicopter Pilot Officers or Lifeguards etc..
