The Tuskegee Airmen Association was founded in 1935 by Colonel James W. Hill, Jr. as a national organization to remember and salute the Tuskegee Airmen who fought in World War II. The group has since grown to include thousands of military members from across the United States and around the world who have served their country through service in both wars. Tuskegee Institute was founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington and Dr. John D. Rockefeller to provide education for African Americans. The institute opened its doors to students of all races in 1892 and currently educates over 500 students from all 50 states and more than 20 countries. Tuskegee Experiment was a scientific study conducted at Tuskegee Institute between 1931-1935 that aimed to isolate the effects of lead exposure on human intelligence. The study showed that white male monkeys who were exposed to high levels of lead had smaller brain sizes than those who were not exposed, which helped prove the link between lead exposure and poor IQ scores in children.
Army gift history goes back to the Revolutionary War. The first time an army was raised for war was in 1775 when George Washington called out the Continental Army. The first battle fought by the Continental Army was at Princeton in New Jersey on April 6, 1777. The Continental Army lost that battle and also lost its commander, General Washington, who died of a heart attack before the fight could resume. In 1781, General John Burgoyne's army invaded America and defeated the American forces at Saratoga. America then regained its independence from Great Britain and began negotiations to join with other countries in order to form a new nation. At this point, gifts were not common among officers in the army because there was no money available to buy gifts for soldiers. However, over time, Gifts became more common as equipment became better known and less likely to be damaged during combat or use by other troops. Many generals throughout history have given gifts such as horses or artillery pieces as Christmas presents for their troops or loved ones. Today's military gift tradition began with World War II when General Eisenhower sent his lieutenant general Patton a $2 million watch as a present (Eisenhower). From there it grew into larger items like tanks or planes that could be purchased outright or shared between friends or family members in order to commemorate service members' sacrifices (Smithsonian Museum of Art). Today'sMilitary Gift Tradition continues with Operation Noble Eagle which is celebrated every year on December 12th across all branches of our military including police and fire departments (National Firehall Association). Tuskegee University was founded in 1885 by Dr. John D. Rockefeller and his father, industrialist Andrew Carnegie. The school became an all-male institution after a vote of the Tuskegee Board of Trustees to do so in 1884. In 1912, the school became Tuskegee Institute for Negro Education after it was purchased by the state of Alabama from Andrew Carnegie’s estate. A total ofAfrica has been at Tuskegee since its inception with students coming from as far away as South Africa, Nigeria, and China. The institute has had many distinguished alumni, including Hollywood stars like James Baldwin and Spencer Tracy, Nobel Prize winners like Toni Morrison and Frederick Douglass, and civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Elijah Muhammad, and Bayard Rustin. Today, Tuskegee is still an important – but fading – legacy in American history. It has been closed down three times since it reopened in 1976 after being modernized through investment by private individuals and organizations including Microsoft founder Paul Allen and Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein. Despite this decline (and public criticism), there is continued support for the institution among historians around the country who argue that it remains one of America’s most vibrant educational institutions for African Americans overall and a powerful advocate for social justice issues across race/ethnicity
In Tuskegee, Alabama, the University of Alabama's School of Medicine was founded in 1881. In 1932, it became the first African American institution of higher learning in the United States. The school closed its doors in 1965, but is still remembered for having educated some of the most famous African Americans including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Alice Paul and Julius Erving.
