Tuscaloosa is the largest city in Alabama and the capital of the Tuscaloosa County. The population was 127,901 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf Coast of Alabama and has a humid subtropical climate. The area that now makes up Tuscaloosa was first settled by Alabamians in the late 18th century as part of what is now Baldwin County. In 1819, Captain James Folsom founded a post office here and named it for Tuscaloosa, Ala., then an Indian village about thirty miles (48 km) southeast of this town. The site of present-day Tuscaloosa was first inhabited by the Cherokee and Creek tribes. It was ceded to Spain in 1701 as part of Treaty of Paris following American Revolutionary War victory over Spanish forces at Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1819, it became an incorporated city under the name "Tuscaloosa". The post office at this time operated from a building on Broadway near where present-day First Avenue and Constitution Street intersection stand today. On January 1st, 1907, Tuscaloosa became a consolidated city with Decatur (now Auburn) as its second largest municipality. In 1886, John Heisman purchased land east of downtown for what would become Birmingham's new university campus; he donated all but one acre (0.40 km2). Construction began in 1889 and finished in 1893; during this time, Heisman also served as mayor and treasurer of Birmingham. The original structure consisted only of two buildings: the old football stadium now known as Bryant–Denny Stadium and the wing that housedthe electrical plant which still stands today on Anniston Road south of Berkeley Drive (now University Boulevard). In 1915, Alabama Polytechnic Institute opened nearby on what is now Emory University'scampus across Main Street from Denny Stadium;Alabama State Normal School followed suit three years later in 1923.
