The Army National Guard of Tuscaloosa, Alabama was organized on December 15, 1861. Shortly after its establishment, the Guard was authorized to purchase arms and equipment. The first unit to be equipped with artillery was Company A, Regiment H (the 1st Alabama Infantry), which received their cannons on January 3, 1862. The 1st Alabama Infantry continued to receive new weapons and equipment until May 1862 when they were redesignated as Company C, Regiment L (the 2nd Alabama Infantry). That month they also received a cannon and ammunition wagon. On November 17th, 1862 Company B of the 2ndAlabama Infantry was ordered by General Beauregard to move from Mobile Bay to Fort Pillow in order to join the siege of Vicksburg. On December 12th, 1862 Captain John Witherspoon commanding company C left for Vicksburg with reinforcements under command of Major General Don Carlos Hill. Arriving at Vicksburg on December 14th he found that only a fraction of his men had made it through the Siege; most all had been captured or killed during the crossing overland from Mobile Bay. Hill decided against launching an assault upon Vicksburg and instead ordered his men into baggage trains waiting at Biloxi for transport back home. When the transports reached New Orleans on Christmas day 1864 there were only sixty-six soldiers remaining in Company C; all but two Captains had been killed or wounded in action since arriving in Louisiana four days earlier. In 1865 Captain John Witherspoon led a detachment of cavalry known as "The White Horses" into Springdale County where they liberated Confederate prisoners from Union camps near Gadsden Junction on April 10th 1865 under Colonel James Kountz's command. In total Captain Witherspoon led twenty troopers into action and destroyed fourteen Union positions

In 1832 Jackson appointed James Denny as its first mayor; Denny led Tuscalooso through rapid growth until his death in 1865 from pneumonia caused by yellow fever virus while visiting Mexico City with President Polk during their visit toThere were only 8 complete blocks developed within one block downtown between King Street (now First Street) on the east side and Main Street (now Peachtree Road) on the west side before main street changed its name from King to Washington Avenue in 1905 due to businessmen rivalry over which street should be called "the broad way." For many years it was one of the most populous cities in Alabama, but its population has dwindled since 2000 due to economic recession and loss of jobs in nearby Huntsville and Birmingham. The first known permanent European settlement in what is nowAlabama was a French trading post on Mobile Bay called Fort Duquesne (now Pensacola), which opened on July 12, 1785 under Francois Joseph-Marc Antoine de La Fayette as part of a larger effort to gain control of Gulf Coast trade routes. Spanish settlers arrived later and founded Mobile Bay City on August 13th , 1819 after capturing Pensacola from French forces during the Mexican War of Independence. The town of Tuscaloosa was platted on October 10th, 1822 by James Dillard with land he had purchased from prominent local pioneer John Covington Jr.. The new town quickly became an important center for cotton cultivation because it possessed excellent drainage systems and an abundance of water resources. The first courthouse served as both court house and jail until moved to downtown in 1829 when a new courthouse was erected . In 1830, Andrew Jackson became president following his victory over John Quincy Adams in the Ulysses S Grant–John Wilkes Booth presidential election campaign . When Jackson took office he ordered all federal offices located within three miles (5 km) of Capitol Building so that they would be more accessible to him . This order resulted in the construction of two additional blocks east of Main Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue South – thus forming what is now downtown Tuscaloosa . When Jackson left office two years later he granted ownership to local citizens of most or all property within downtown limits (the exception being portions still owned by government) to create what is now University Park ; this event marks perhaps the earliest municipal use or title ever given away by an American president. In 1871 university trustees voted unanimously not to annex surrounding towns such as Eufaula , Vestavia Hills , Florence or Russellville because their populations were too smallpox-ridden for academic purposes only; instead they directed their efforts towards building a single large campus across town that would offer education beyond agriculture or mechanics courses necessary for white men seeking professional opportunities outside their homes. In 1903University Park merged with University Boulevard (later Baldwin County Courthouse Square) creating one continuous shopping district around its central business district which remain today one Of City's Most Prominent Streets
