Trussville is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,766 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area and is home to Pratt Institute and the Trussville Symphony Orchestra. The name "Trussville" comes from an Indian word meaning "the crossing over." The first settler in Trussville was James A. Trussell who arrived in 1821. He built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street. The community developed around this cabin until it became known as "Travelltown". In 1830, John Fenton built a gristmill on the east side of town which became known as "Fenton's Mill". Another early settler, Elijah Dixon, began farming on land that now includes parts of downtown Trussville. He founded the First Baptist Church in 1835 and named his farmhouse "Dixon's Farm". In 1865, Andrew Jordon purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) of woodland north of town from Wabash Coal Company for $10 per acre ($1 million today). This land would become one of the most important tracts in central Alabama because it housed both Pratt Institute (founded in 1871), which had its beginnings as an agricultural school; and Birmingham's original waterworks system (built by George Stephenson between 1792 and 1800). Development along this tract accelerated during Jackson's term as president due to railroad construction across central Alabama – including through Trussville – leading to increased trade opportunities for local farmers and businesses. By 1870, about 60% of all production in Jefferson County took place within three miles (5 km) of Trussville proper. This period also saw significant growth at Trinity Episcopal Church located just south of town on State Road 827 where wealthy merchants such as Samuel Morse met for religious services at their home prior to starting their businesses or hosting political meetings outside Birmingham during Reconstruction Periods. Negroes began coming into town beginning around 1910 when they were allowed access to public education through white schools closed for African Americans following Reconstruction efforts led by then-Governor Albert Buford seeking compliance with Ulysses S. Grant's Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery throughout much southern America while leaving many black men still subject to plantation labor under conditions often considered barbaric by whites at the time - some historians argue that this decision constituted race discrimination against black people rather than emancipation policy mistakes made more generally throughout American history during these times period due largely to racism inherent within upper crust white elites individualized against African Americans living below them socially/economically/ politically/ culturally & emotionally (& sometimes genitally) prioritizing their interests above those Of everyone else]).
