The Trussville Army Ammunition Plant, now known as the Trussville Arsenal, was a military facility in Trussville, Alabama. It was active during World War I and World War II and produced munitions for the United States military. The plant closed in 1971 and is now an industrial park. The arsenal began operations on December 8, 1892, as the Military Ammunition Depot No. 1 of the Alabama Soldiers' Home District under command of Colonel J.M.Trussell of Montgomery County. It was redesignated Armament Depot No. 3 on July 10, 1903; Ammunition Depot No. 4 on October 25, 1917; and finally Armament Depot No. 5 on November 16th of that year after it became part of the National Defense Reserve System with full responsibility for all armaments production in Alabama pending congressional appropriation for that purpose by act of March 1st following (the date having been moved to May 11th because war time appropriations were not yet made). On February 15th 1907 the depot received orders from President Theodore Roosevelt to construct a new plant at Springfield Armory which would be built adjacent to present day Trussville Arsenal site (then called First Street School Road). On April 7th 1910 construction startedsite had reached its final destination but due to funding shortages it did not finish until 1912 when it was merged intoArmament Depot #5 at Trussville Arsenal site effective October 25th 1917 Construction then proceeded slowly because funds were required to outfit American Expeditionary Forces during World War I Battle Of The Bulge before they could be committed back home to munitions production In order to meet this obligation armaments plants were erected at Danforth Arsenal Massachusetts(now Waco Texas)and Fort Knox Kentucky while ammunition plants were also established at Erie Ontario Pennsylvania(now Niagara Falls New York)and Smolensk Russia(now St Petersburg Federal District)) However these facilities only lasted until 1939 when all three went out of business due primarily to US entry into World War II . All three arsenals reopened between 1941-1946 as part of Army rearmament program however their original functions have largely been performed by local government agencies such as nostalgia centers since then .
