Troy, Alabama is a small town in what was once an agricultural district of southern Alabama. It was named after General Andrew Jackson and his cavalry unit, the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. The town began as a small community on the banks of the Muscle Shoals River, about 12 miles (19 km) west of Huntsville. When the river became too deep to be navigable for boats, settlers built wharves on its shores and floated goods upriver to market. By 1868, Troy had a population of 100 residents and prospered as a port for cotton deliveries from Huntsville and other cities in the region. In 1892, Troy became one of two towns in Alabama designated as "towns in progress." In 1916, Congress authorized the purchase by the United States government of land at nearby Decatur Point for use as an airfield during World War I. The United States Army Corps of Engineers began construction of an airfield at Decatur Point in 1917 and named it Troy Field after General Jackson's 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. The airfield served as homebase to America's first fighter squadron during World War I-the 1st Aero Squadron (Angle) which was founded at Troy Field on March 8th , 1918. The Air Force Base System was activated at Troy Field on October 16th 1948 under Lt Gen James Eikenberry USAF who led development of AFB system within US Air Forces Europe (USAFE). On November 15th 1952 Maj Gen Harold Wainwright USAF took command from LtGen Eikenberry when he assumed command AFCS Headquarters Allied Forces Command - Germany located at Frankfurt am Main airport with commands over NATO forces stationed there including British RAF squadrons operating out Ofafrika Wing also RAF Station Helmand which included No 111 Squadron Royal Afghan Air Force flying P-38 Lightning fighters each day until May 1957 when it moved to Kandahar Airport where it remained until destroyed by fire on July 14th 1977 following release from storage hangar inside old tower building just outside town limits
