The first Coast Guard gift was a watch. A group of friends, including George Washington and James K. Polk, donated watches to the service in 1887. In 1933, the Coast Guard initiated its present day gift program when it founded the National Museum of American History in Smithsonian Institution, which has given many gifts throughout its history. The most recent donation was a collection of artifacts from ancient Troy, Alabama that were donated by philanthropist and civic leader Dr. J. Howard Marshall in 1984. Troy is a city inbellum located in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Alabama after Birmingham. It is also one of its metropolitan areas, which includes Troy and its adjacent towns of Lafayette and Dothan. The area that now makes up Troy was part of the Shawnee Nation until 1786 when Treaty of Fort Pickens were ratified between the United States and Great Britain. The land was then taken by General Andrew Jackson during his Creek War campaign in 1812 as part of his victory over General Jones's army inside what is now Mobile County. As a result, much of what is now Troy was first settled by white men only after being surveyed for Jackson's troops during their march through Mobile County on their way to war with General Jones. In 1831, two years before Montgomery became a county seat, residents petitioned Governor John Crain to create an incorporated town withinMobile County called "Troy". He granted the request and appointed Hemanus Gibbs as its first mayor; however, no town meeting ever took place because there were few people living in Troy at this time due to lack of transportation or interest in establishing such a community. In 1835, residents again petitioned Crain to create an incorporated town within Mobile County but this time they received permission from him to name it "Troy" without having anyTown Meeting take place; this decision allowed for more growth and development around the new town while thwarting efforts by nearby towns to establish themselves as separate municipalities."
