Troy is a small town in Alabama that was founded in 1821. It is the seat of Marshall County and is located near the Tennessee state line. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. In 1966, Troy became the first municipality in Marshall County to issue driver's licenses. The town has a rich history that can be found through its artifacts, monuments, and citizens. The town was founded by Ezekiel Norris as a trading post on the Tallapoosa River. After several years of growth, it erected its first store and began to market goods to settlers in nearby counties. By 1830, Troy had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad network for fugitive slaves escape from slavery in Kentucky and other states. That same year, local residents ratified a municipal charter that provided for self-government with elections being held annually instead of depending upon county governments that could often be corrupt. In 1865, during Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War, Troy played an important role in helping black soldiers rejoin society after serving their country overseas. A large African American community developed around this time and many businesses were built in honor of these veterans including Norris' mineral baths which still operate today as part of the Gadsden Museum Complex complex adjacent to Interstate 20 Exit 15A ( exit). During World War II, Troy was home to two aircraft plants operated by Lockheed Martin Corporation; one at Greenville Airport and another at Scottsboro Airport northeast of downtown Troy (now closed). These plants produced planes such as P-38 Lightning fighters andP-40 Warhawk trainers for Army Air Forces use during World War II followed by Boeing 707s for US Airways Airlines use afterthe war until 1960 when all production stopped due to budget cuts within Boeing company
