The Navy needed an extensive port so they built USS John F Kennedy (CV-22) at nearby Apalachicola Beach in 1942. This ship housed many naval vessels including USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Fitzgerald (SSN 724), USS John S McCain (AZ-7), USS Harpoon (CDR-19),USS Bainbridge Island (HMCS Iroquois), and numerous Landing Craft Mechanized Battalion assignments across various commands during World War II. After the war ended, talladega slowly began to lose its importance as a commercial center as trade shifted towards larger cities like Birmingham or Mobile. Talladega is a small town in Pike County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Talladega were German immigrants who came to Alabama in the 1840s. In 1851, John A. Hill and his family moved from Greenville, South Carolina to Talladega and started a farm which they continued to run until 1907. In 1892, John Fenton built a sawmill on Sweetwater Creek near present day Talladega Lake. In 1913, Henry Hargrave became head of the local cotton gin and mill owner and developed what is now downtown Talladega into an urban center with several stores, a post office/civic building and two hotels. In 1921–22 Harry Wickersham served as mayor for three terms; he was later elected governor of Alabama in 1966. One of Wickersham's goals during his mayoral term was to increase economic development opportunities for Talladeaga by developingtallado gas fields under development by E&P Oil Company Limited (EOP). The city prospered through these early years but declined significantly after World War II due in part to low demand for cotton due to increased production elsewhere; however, since the late 1990s growth has resumed with renewed investment particularly around downtown Talladeaga and along Sweetwater Creek which has seen significant redevelopment including an Arts DistrictCompleted in 2017 that includes several high-end restaurantsAs well as new housing developments such as Park Placee Development LLC’s $130 million mixed-use project adjacent to PPG Peacock Stadium that will include additional retail spaceand hotel rooms beneath ground levelThis revitalization has made it one of Talledega’s most economically vibrant cities today despite its small population size

Talladega is an Alabama city located in Sumter County, just north of the Tennessee state line. The population was 12,567 at the 2010 census. It is known for its horse racing industry and other agriculture businesses. The first white people to live in Talladega were slaveholders who owned slaves in nearby Mobile, Ala. In 1818, General Andrew Jackson's forces destroyed the Mobile Bay Bridge and burned down the old sawmill on Fort Payne Hill as part of a campaign against slavery. This event helped solidify Talladega's status as a slave-holding town. The first store in Talladega was built by John Cockerill in 1827. At one point, it was the largest mercantile center in Alabama and had relationships with both Georgia and Louisiana. The town prospered until 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered all black soldiers fromAlabama into battle leading to mass slavery throughout much of the Confederacy. In 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army to Talladega after being ordered to move them closer to Chattanooga because he believed that they would be more easily able to operate cotton plantations across Tennessee than near Birmingham where abolitionists Almira Watts and Joseph Mason Free thought they could overthrow slavery without fighting outside of Tuscaloosa. When Union troops arrived at Talladega on April 9th, 1861 they discovered that most of Forrest's men had already fled or been captured by Union troops (the few remaining Confederates surrendered). 1st Lieutenant William Pemberton took over command at this point and began plans for reconstruction which included providing education opportunities for freedmen as well as restarting trade with Georgia and Louisiana so that local economies wouldn't collapse under Reconstruction rule Pemberton also founded what is now Eastern State University there during Reconstruction
In 1892, the first Talladega racecar was built by J.P. Morgan and George W. Durant. The car raced at different events until 1915 when it was retired from racing due to engine problems. In 1925, the track was opened to the public and in 1957, NASCAR merged with AAA motorcycle racing to create NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition.
