Talladega is a town in Alabama, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Talladega County. The name Talladega comes from the Choctaw word "tally-da", meaning "to ask for". Talladega is located in northern Mobile County on both sides of the Opelika River and within walking distance of downtown Mobile. The town began as a small agricultural community on the east side of the Opelika River, about two miles upstream from present-day downtown Mobile. In 1881, when Mobile became a city and Talladega Township was created, it continued to be an agricultural community with families using nearby Mound Bayou for irrigation and water storage. By 1911, whenriver navigation improved enough to make shipping downriver more profitable, business people decided to move their village downstream into what is now downtownMobile. In 1901, Elijah Hicks developed one of the first commercial areas in Mobile by building a sawmill along Opelika River and selling lumber to farmers on either side of him. He also built several churches and schools in what is now downtownMobile before his death in 1907 at age 53 years old. His son John Hicks bought out his father's interest in 1901 and continued operation of Hicks Saw Mills until 1940 when he sold it to Consolidated Coal Company Limited for $10 million dollars (). In that year also came approximately 100 acres (40 hectares) of land which was donated by John Athem Cooke which became home to Convair Aviation Corporation’s largest production hangar north or south shoreline from Southern Missisippi . That company would later become known as Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems Division (LMA). Over time other companies have leased space or purchased land adjacent to LMA including Raytheon Missile Systems Company’s main plant on Enterprise Drive Northeast near Gulfport Airpark ; Boeing Co.'s new Stennis AFB southeast corner opposite Lake Pontchartrain; ATK Missile Systems' Plant #1 just outside Phenix City; Hughes Aircraft Company's 1st Street East Headquarters Building; McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Products mills just outside Birmingham Airport;; Bankers Life Insurance Company's Plant #2 just off US Highway 401 (now I-95 );and Exxon Mobil Corporation's plants located next door each other - One across I-95 from Downtown Mobile Today much of this older industrial infrastructure still exists but primarily uses its original name: Hucks Saw Mills LLC., “Hucks Mill” being pronounced likehatta-, meaning “to ask for” Efforts are being made by residents & businesses who live Downtown & around Town Center/Downtown Business District (& surrounding neighborhoods) today & throughout our history too support growth opportunities here! Talladega, Alabama is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 1,634 at the 2010 census. Talladega has a history dating back to the early 1800s. It was founded on November 3, 1817 by James WOODLEY and his family as a trading post on the Talladega River. In 1827, Talladega became the county seat of Jefferson County and remained so until 1901 when Birmingham became the county seat. The name "Talladega" comes from an older Indian word meaning "hill of good omen." The first settlers in what is now Talladega were white men who came overland from Georgia in 1802. They built cabins and conducted trade with the Cherokee Indians before settling down around 1795. At that time, they were farmers and traders who owned land along the Talladega River. During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many white men moved to Alabama to work in black schools that had been set up state-run Programs to help rebuild society after slavery was abolished. Many of these men also bought property in what is now Talladaga during this time frame. By 1870, there were more than 100 businesses in town and it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1901, Birmingham became the new county seat due to its growth as a steel city following World War I. However, because Jefferson County was still part of Birmingham City Limits at that time, much of its growth took place within Tallasdale Township which made up parts of both cities limits at that time In 1929 Tallasdale Township merged with other townships within Birmingham City Limits to form eastside municipality which continues today as part ofBirmingham proper . When East Side Municipality absorbed most of westside municipality (the portion lying south of Morningside Drive) it lost all vestiges of its independent identity including its own school district which continued operating out Ofalli Elementary School until 1969 when it opened under sponsorship from then Mayor Richard Jaffe . After he left office in 1974 developer John Pritzker purchased most if not all OfalliElementary School and replaced it with Belle Meander Academy which remains open today as one of only three high schools operated by eastside municipality . It should be noted that while Belle Meander Academy remains open today as one high school operated by eastside municipality (along with nearby solution schools such as Gadsden Charter High School), there are no educational institutions located within town limits itself – all educational facilities are located within or adjacent municipalities where they serve students primarily or entirely outside townlimits boundaries
