Talladega, Alabama is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The name Talladega comes from the Chickasaw word "talla-daga" meaning "hill of cotton." The first white people to live in what is now Talladega came overland from Georgia in 1821. They were led by General Andrew Jackson and settled on Lookout Hill near present-day Bryant Lake. What became known as Talladega was founded by Capt. John Covington and his party on December 5, 1825, when they built a Log Cabin on the east bank of the Opelika River south of present day Bagdad Road. The town began as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail before it became an important transportation route linking Alabama with Texas and Mexico. By 1830, Talladega had become an active community with its first Baptist church and school house. In 1836, Captain Charles Goodloe established a post office at Talladega with six mail sacks capacity per week for local residents to send mail to their families back home in Georgia. When Mobile gained independence from Spanish America in 1898, Talladega became one of the largest frontier towns in Alabama because it lay between Mobile and Montgomery—the capital of Alabama—and could Interstate 65 be used for trade? With Reconstruction looming following Brown v Board of Education rulings that African Americans were citizens within their states rather than second class citizens facing discrimination outside their state borders ( see also Jim Crow laws ), efforts were made to revive downtown business districts such as Lamar Street which had been abandoned during Reconstruction times; this effort included construction of two blocks long streetscape reminiscent of old Confederate days along Broadway Avenue which still retains much architectural significance today including several contributing buildings dating back to early 1800s including: First Baptist Church (1898), Post Office (1936), Masonic Temple (1899) and American Legion Building (1911). This reborn district soon grew into one of most vibrant downtown cores throughout southeastern US during its heyday beginning around World War II until decline following city center's redevelopment after war ended In 2007–2008 Historic preservation staff working with then Mayor Bob Buckman conducted research into aspects associated with declined commercial era Downtown core such as loss or destruction/alteration thereto due primarily to lack or unwillingness by developers since post-war period; resultant report identified numerous contributing factors include availability/availabilityof other equivalents or expanding services available within adjacent neighborhoods; shift away from larger scale retail development towards smaller projects more concerned about surrounding communities quality Of Life not impacted etc.; high cost associated with physical rehabilitation; need for stronger zoning regulations requiring higher levels OF REUSE & PRESERVATION
