Sylacauga is part of the Birmingham–Hollywood–Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Sylacauga comes from the Creek word "sazaki-ga," meaning "hollow place." The first settlers in what is now Sylacauga were two families who came to this area in 1828 and 1830. They called the site "Foley Landing." In 1836, three brothers named Henry, Robert, and Andrew Foley settled near present-day Sylvania Avenue and Woodward Street. They founded the first post office in Lowndes County. A mill they built on Millstream River became an important center for textile production throughout Alabama during the late 19th century. In 1881, John Ewing bought land around present-day Sylvania Avenue and Woodward Street from Andrew Foley for $1,000 (). He built a large cotton plantation there that continues to be used today as a business park by residents and businesses. His wife Mary Ewing operated it until her death in 1931. Many of John's descendants still live there today; included are former U S Congressman William Hance (D-Alabama) and current Mayor of Sylacauga Donny Hathaway III. Sylacauga is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 14,992 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clarke County. It was founded in 1819 by white settlers on land that had been purchased from the Cherokee Indians. The first permanent settler in Sylacauga was James Mclntyre, who arrived in 1819 and built the first store and home in what is now Sylacauga. The original name for the town was "Moses." A post office called Mosesville was established in 1827, but it failed to take off and closed down in 1829. In 1830, John Purdy opened a grocery store and tavern called Bowen's Store on Main Street. This business survived until 1845 when it burned down. In 1840, two brothers named Daniel Boone bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land east of present-day Sylacauga from the Creek Nation for $5 an acre – this became known as Boone's Valley – which served as a center for hunting and farmingroduce production until recently. The town began to grow around this new growth; construction of homes began shortly thereafter and residents started using their own money to buy land or build themselves homes complexity increased rapidly due to natural resources such as coal seams discovered along the way including coal mines at Big Hill Road today's Baldwin Highway . Coal mining helped contribute greatly to economic development during the late 1800s through into the 1920s; however, with overpopulation beginning to take its toll on housing prices throughout much of central Alabama by 1925 many companies moved out of central Alabama altogether leaving Sylacauga largely abandoned economically until recent years when gas drilling brought jobs back while also enhancing infrastructure needed for deeper water drilling making Sylacuga more vibrant once again During World War II interest peaked because of plentiful supplies available following Axis forces surrendering Germany; however manufacturing stopped immediately due to Allied bombing raids throughout most southern Germany which destroyed factories anyhow soon after starting just as war ended so no factory could produce anything worth having especially aluminum Today SylACauGa has seen some resurgence with businesses moving back into town & redevelopment taking place thanks to gas drilling bringing jobs back while also enhancing infrastructure needed for deeper water drilling making SylAcuga more vibrant once again
