Sylacauga is a city in north Alabama, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harbinger County. Sylacauga is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metro area. The name Sylacauga comes from two different Creek words: "sialk" meaning "wolf" and "cahoua" meaning " swamp." Both words were used to describe areas that were covered in water up to their waist and had high populations of wolves and other animals because they could not live on dry land. The first known white settlement in what became Sylacauga occurred around 1800 when James Kincaid and his family arrived from Georgia with their horses and wagon train. They built a cabin on the banks of the Talachoma River. This village was abandoned by 1829 when navigation improved enough for shipping across the river. In 1836, Captain Folsom founded Fort Folsom on similar grounds as Fort Knox in Kentucky, which served as a military post until it was abandoned in 1841 due to difficulties with malaria control over an exposed location near Mobile Bayou. In 1840, General Robert Ewell established Camp Pickens on opposite sides of Mobile Bayou between Stroudsburg (now Glass City) and Montgomery (now Moseley). On December 12, 1840, Ewell's army attacked Camp Pickens while its defenders were eating dinner; most of the camp's occupants were killed or captured before they could flee into Battle Halt downstream where they surrendered to General Robert Ewell rather than fight another battle against superior numbers under Confederate forces after being told they would be pardoned if they did so. In 1851-1852 Elijah Hicks settled northwest of present-day Sylacauga along High Creek which he named Hicksville after himself and his father John Hicks Sr.. A post office called Hicksville was established in 1855., but it closed within one year because no mail reached it from there. The town developed around this early post office because farmers who grew corn found that transportation available only via wagons allowed them to sell their products only at fair prices outside town limits
