This gift history was organized as a way to commemorate the deployment of the unit and its members to Afghanistan.
Sylacauga, Alabama is a small town in DeKalb County, Alabama. The population was 9,895 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sylacauga is located on the eastern edge of the Mobile Bayou and its ZIP code is 36606. The first settlement in what would become Sylacauga occurred around 1820 when General Wilkinson and his troops advanced down the Mobile River towards what would become Decatur County. He named this new community "Newbern" after Nicholas Newbern, lieutenant general of United States forces in South America during that time. A post office called Newbern was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In March 1861, Confederate General Alexander Stephens ordered all Union forces to cross over into Alabama and march to Selma to open up the state to slavery under the authority of President Abraham Lincoln. As many as 10 percent of Alabama's adult male citizens were required to serve duty within three months of secession from the Union; Sylacauga had no such obligation. While most residents chose not to fight, some 400 men from Sylacauga volunteered for Confederate service including 30 officers and men who enlisted under Colonel John Sibley (the first black officer commissioned into America). Only two homes remaining from original Newbern community are still standing today: one dating back to 1825 and built by Captain Ebenezer Goodspeed; and a replica house built by Drury Ladd which currently resides at Historic Union Station Museum near downtown Montgomery
