In 1915, Sylvan Coffee Company was founded in Sylacauga, and it continues to be one of the largest and most popular coffee companies in Alabama today. The first coffee beans were grown in Sylacauga by James Witherspoon and his team of farmers. Witherspoon was very interested in developing a robust flavor profile for his coffee, and he decided to use a variety of different beans from around the world to create this unique taste. over time, other small businesses joined Witherspoon's company, and together they started to produce some of the best-quality cupof Joe ever made. The first coffee crop in Sylacauga was grown by African Americans in the early 1800s, and later, white farmers began to grow coffee too. In 1907, a group of Sylacauga businessmen founded the Sylacauga Coffee Company, which became one of the largest coffee companies in Alabama. Over time, other businesses joined the company and it grew even more powerful. In 1970, the company merged with another large coffee company, The Roasters Corporation. This merger made Sylacauga one of the most important coffee towns in Alabama. Today, Sylacauga's rich coffee culture is well-known throughout Southeast Alabama and beyond.
Sylacauga is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,057 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sylacauga is located on U.S. Route 231 about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of downtown Birmingham and 18 miles (29 km) south-southwest of Tuscaloosa. The first white settler in what would become Sylacauga was James Fenton in 1830. In 1836, John Witherspoon founded a gristmill here and named it for his daughter, Sarah Fenton Witherspoon. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1840 but was rebuilt and became known as "Fenton's Mill". In 1849, Elijah White built a sawmill here which he operated until 1870 when it was sold to Ephraim Hinson. Hinson renamed it "Hinson's Sawmills" and later "Hinson & Son". In 1906, J P Hardin bought the mill from Hinson's son Edwin Hinson and continues to operate it today as Hardin Sawmills LLCorporated with headquarters in Cullman, Alabama. In 1916/17, Sylacauga had 1 post office; by 1915 there were 5 post offices in Marshall County alone! By 1930 there were 16 post Offices with a population of over 100 people! 1908: First Baptist Church building dedication . . . Reverend A G Wells attended services from his home at 4th Street & Union Avenue corner then left for church ..... Sylacauga was founded in 1821 and was named for General Andrew Jackson's Creek land grants. The town grew up around the courthouse, a cotton gin, and other businesses. Sylacauga became a center of education in the early 1800s. In 1851, it merged with neighboring Cullman to form the city of Montgomery. The city lost its status as an independent municipality after Montgomery seceded from Alabama in 1861. However, Sylacauga continued to exist as a smalltown until it annexed by Montgomery in 1971. The history of Sylacauga is packed with memorable moments. For example, on July 4th, 1881, local residents gathered together to celebrate what would become known as "Sylacauga Day." They raised Confederate battleflags and picnic food before taking part in a parade through the town. The event marked the beginning of a decades-long commemoration of that fateful day that helped solidify Sylacuga's allegiance to the Confederacy. On November 15th, 1918, locals commemorated World War I when they held an outdoor dinner at which they cooked over open flames their favorite dish - fried chicken! Sylacauga also has some interesting cultural roots dating back to its early days as an educational center and community hub. For example, one popular hobby among people living in Sylacuga at this time was playing checkers - something that still persists today! Additionally, music festivals have been held here annually since 1984 (the first year they were announced). And finally, there's always something special going on during FreedomFest - like fireworks shows or car shows!
Sylacauga was founded in 1796 by Captain James Robertson and pioneer family. The original town was located on the east bank of the Alabama River. It grew rapidly, and by 1812 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1814, Governor James Kenedy ordered Colonel William Ligon to build a fort at Sylacauga to protect the town from possible attack by Native Americans. The fort became a key part of the military strategy used to defend against Indian attacks during the American Revolutionary War. The first white settler in Sylacauga was John Jenkins who arrived in 1798. In 1814, he built a cabin near present-day Flora Avenue and Court Street. He also established a small grocery store in his new settlement. 2nd Lieutenant Nathaniel Pryor moved into what is now known as Pryor's Lane in 1818 and began developing land around what is today Pioneer Square Park. Pryor soon started trading goods with nearby Mobile for goods brought downriver from Tennessee by traders such as Andrew Jackson and Robert Morris. He also built some homes on his property which are still standing today including Drury Hall (now home to Heritage Village). Pryor's house still stands today and can be seen from US- Route 431 intersection just north of downtown Sylacauga
