Sylacauga is a small town located in Alabama. The population was 9,031 as of the 2010 census. Sylacauga is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Sylacauga was Solomon Harris who arrived in 1785. He and his family were the first to purchase land near what is now the downtown area of Sylacauga. The early settlers developed this land for agriculture, and built many homes which still stand today. One of these pioneer families, the Smiths, are also considered to be some of Sylacauga's most well-known citizens. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson visited Sylacauga and conferred with its leaders about developing a new township for the townspeople in present day Birmingham Township. This did not take place until 1861 when Congress passed an act creating Montgomery County and giving it authority over all of Alabama's townships west of Mobile Bayou (later known as I-10). As a result, control over Sylva Township passed from Montgomery County to local authorities within days of its passage! In 1881, James Hargrave donated $5,000 towards erecting a public square in honor of his wife Charity Hargrave (1828-1909). The Square was dedicated on November 12th, 1881 by then Mayor Averill Harrold III after being funded by subscribing members from throughout Sylacauga! It remains one of Sylacuga

Sylacauga is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,402 at the 2010 census. Sylacauga is part of the Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was named for General James H. Sylacauga, who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War. The first settler in what is now Sylacauga was William Poston, who built a cabin on Lower Creek in 1824. The first post office was established here in 1826, and until 1881 it was called Postonville. A Presbyterian church was built here in 1837 and dedicated by Governor Robert E. Lee; it is still standing today and serves as a cultural center for the community. In 1870, Wiley Crenshaw purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present-day Sylacauga to start a new town site that would become known as Crenshawville. He named his new town after him—Sylacauga County being one of its original six counties created on December 12, 1870. The first school district within present day Sylacauga County was organized on February 9, 1886 when the Union Consolidated School District No. 1 was formed from parts of the old Riley School District No.-1 and Parker School District No.-2 following consolidation of those districts into one unit under new management by Superintendent John Burchill effective January 1, 1886 On July 2nd 1890 Mrs Mabel Jnr founded Baptist Sunday Schools which opened their doors to children aged five years old with instruction starting at home each Sunday morning On October 10th 1896 First Baptist Church opened its doors with Reverend Alexander Lewis officiating From 1895 until 1913 First Methodist Episcopal Church also operated from this building before moving to their current location across Patton Avenue near University Boulevard . On November 6th 1906 Second Baptist Church opened their doors with Reverend Dr J L Hardwick officiating followed by Third Baptist Church which became active on December 15th 1907 With Congregational services conducted every Saturday evening at Second Methodist Episcopal Church until 1912 when they relocated to Temple University where they remain today In 1915 First African American church – Zion United Methodist Church became active with Rev G D McKnight serving as Pastor from 1915-1916
Sylacauga was founded in 1819 by Andrew Jackson and his family. He named the town after a small waterfall on the Alabama River, which he said was "the prettiest place in all of America." The village grew quickly, and by 1830 it had a population of over 100 people. The first school opened in 1833, and soon there were also tannery, blacksmithing, groceries, and other businesses. By 1840 Sylacauga had a total population of over 300 people. In 1847 General Sherman visited Sylacauga to assess its damage from Battle of Perryville. After surveying the situation he ordered the burning of all buildings in town except for churches and military barracks.
