It is named for General James Sylacauga who fought in the American Revolution. The community has been around since 1819 when John Hance and his family moved from Tennessee to what is now Clarke County, Alabama. In that year, they founded the town of Sylacauga on the south side of Mobile Bayou. The first settler was William Hance and his family who arrived in 1819. They built a cabin on land donated by General James Sylacauga who had served with distinction during the American Revolution. General Sylacaja fought against British forces at Montero Pass in 1794 and later helped lead an army against Spanish forces near Pensacola Beach in 1798

Sylacauga is a town located in central Alabama, United States. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. Sylacauga is one of the oldest towns in Alabama and its history goes back to1836 when it was called Hartsville. The first settler in what is now Sylacauga was James Mays who arrived in 1836. He named his land Hartsville after his home place in England. soon after, other pioneers had come to the area and started farming and trading with neighboring settlements. By 1840, there were more than 30 families residing in what is now Sylacauga. On December 12, 1845, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a Confederate army against Union forces near present-day Sylacauga. The battle resulted in nearly 50 casualties on both sides with Confederate General Forrest taking 13 prisoners including three of his own sons! Some historians believe that this event may have helped boost support for the Confederacy among local citizens which helped contribute to their success during the Civil War. In 1868, John Pemberton bought 640 acres of land east of present day Sylvania Avenue from Andrew Johnson for $3 per acre! This purchase also marked the beginning of development within present day Sylacauga boundaries as Pemberton began construction on what would become known as Pemberton Park (later renamed Forest Hills). In 1870 he laid out streets running north-south through what are now downtown Sylvania and eastern neighborhoods such as Old Town Sylvania before extending them westward into today’s Forest Hills neighborhood where they intersect River Road just south of Interstate 5 exit 8A/US 31 exit 417A/Alabama State Route 62 intersection
When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Alabama, they found a land that was mostly forested and swampy. There were few rivers or settlements, so the Native Americans had to create their own ways of life. For many years, the Alawites lived in villages near the confluence of two large streams. The Alawites were a religious group that practiced Shiite Islam. The first European settlers in Alabama were Frenchmen who came from Quebec in 1692. They started an agricultural colony on what is now Mobile Bayou and soon began trading with the Seminoles, who lived north of them on Coosa River. In 1715, British colonists arrived in what is now Alabama and began trading with the Indians. The British wanted to control all of North America and they hoped to turn the Seminoles against their Indian neighbors by making them into slaves. In 1717, Spain sent a fleet led by Admiral San Felipe de Caridad to explore what is nowAlabama. When he reached Mobile Bayou, he saw land that he thought was India but it was actually part of Florida! He named this area Pensacola because he thought it would be easier for Spanish sailors to find there than anywhere else on Earth. In 1718, Spain built Fort St George at Pensacola as part of its efforts to control the Gulf coast and stop English traders from reaching England through Mexico City. By 1720, Pensacola had become one of Spain's most important colonies because it allowed Spaniards access to trade with Europe while keeping Native American tribes under control. In 1802, Alabama became a territory of Texas when Mexico lost its independence from Spain. At that time, Alabama was also part of Tennessee (which belonged to Kentucky). Because Texas wasn't supervised by Madrid like Louisiana was under French rule, Texans decided that they should get their own country instead! This caused some tension between Texas and Alabama over which state should be given more attention!
