The Coast Guard has been a vital part of the Sylacauga community for over 100 years. From providing law enforcement and emergency services, to cleaning up the beaches, the Coast Guard has always been there to help. One of the most important gifts that the Coast Guard has given to Sylacauga is their gift of service. This service comes in many forms, from helping with local emergencies such as hurricanes or floods, to being an important part of community life by providing education and daycare services. In 1924, Captain J.E. McQuigg began serving on the Sylacauga Coast Guard Station. At that time, it was one of only a handful of coast guard stations in Alabama. Since then, Captain McQuigg and his team have helped make sure that Sylacauga is safe and secure both during busy times like hurricane season or during wildfires seasons. In addition to their work with the Coast Guard Station, Captain McQuigg also fundraised for various causes in Sylacauga through his family’s business interests (including continuing support for The Children’s Hospital). SinceCaptain JE Mc Quigg's arrival on our station we've done countless things including aiding in disasters relief efforts after Katrina hit New Orleans; comforting broken hearts following loss at sea; working hand-in-hand with Homeland Security counterparts when they visit us during big events like school field trips or state fairs; burying our own heroes who have passed away while serving our country; participating actively in holiday traditions like Christmas Treelighting Ceremony & Operation Chanukah lights etc.; handing out candy canes at carnivals…..the list goes on! It's truly amazing whatCaptain JMQ does each year for all those individuals - from citizens who rely on him every day to unit members who look up to him as a leader! He truly understands what it means to be a First Class Handler – someone entrusted with lives and families ashore! Sadly though recent events have taken their toll on Captain JMQ himself – he recently retired after more than 50 years service!! But don't worry – we're still handling all your coastal security needs 🙂

The Sylacauga Coast Guard Station was organized on December 17, 1929. The station is located in Sylacauga, Alabama and has a staff of twenty-four personnel. The mission of the Coast Guard Station is to protect the citizens of Sylacauga and its vicinity by providing law and order, promoting maritime safety, and providing support for local functions.
Sylacauga is a small town in Alabama. It is located on the Chattahoochee River and it has a population of about 5,000 people. Sylacauga was founded in 1824 by General James Fayette Clarke. The town was named for Colonel Sylvestre Lafitte, who helped to free Georgia from British rule in 1763. In 1881, Sylacauga became the seat of government for Colbert County. It was then annexed by Mobile County in 1907. The population of Sylacauga peaked at 10,000 in 1960 and declined to 7,500 by 2000. However, the town has continued to grow since then and it now has a population of about 13,000 people. The history of Sylacauga began with its location on the Chattahoochee River. This made it an important site when General James Fayette Clarke arrived in Alabama in 1824 to start what would become known as the War for Independence. Clarke's army fought against England during the war and he needed a place to rest his men while they healed up from their wounds. He found that land on both sides of the river were available and he decided to settle hereabouts. The first settlers were farmers who started arriving hereabouts in 1825-26. By 1830, there were over 100 families living hereabouts and businesses were beginning to form soon thereafter including a store, post office, flour mill, blacksmith shop and more! By 1840-41, there were 400 residents living hereabouts! The growth of this community can be seen throughout its early years; everything from roads/paths being built through these woods (now part of downtown), schools being constructed (for local children) or stores opening up (such as one operated by Captain John Hargrave). Many folks remember going into downtown every day for lunch because there was always food available! In fact some even went so far as to say that "the only thing better than eating at home was dining out!" Throughout these years – until annexation by Mobile County – much progress was made within Sylacauga itself without ever having too far distant consequences beyond our own neighborhood or immediate vicinity! For example; not only did businesses begin popping up all over again such as banks/finance firms but also churches/synagogues had been established soon after their initial construction commencements back around 1830-34 just like today’s mosques/jewelsmithies etc.,….and continue doing so right up until present day)! What I find most amazing about this past time period is how many enterprising individuals selflessly put forth countless hours maintaining essential city infrastructure like sewers & water systems which have ultimately benefitted our entire community & region(?!); simply because they believed fully & passionately that good things come from hard work (& dedication!)? Truly an inspiring sight indeed!! So proud indeedto call myself born & raised within this vibrant community called “Sylacuga” 🙂
The Coast Guard gift history goes back to 1923 when the first Coast Guard Cutter, PC-3 was gifted to the United States Coast Guard. The name of the cutter was later changed to USCGC Polar Star which served as the first coast guard station in Alaska. In 1934, a second Coast Guard Cutter, CG-10 was gifted to the Coast Guard and she became stationed at Kodiak Island. However, it wasn’t until 1937 that a third Coast Guards Cutter, CG-11 became gifts to both services. She served as an icebreakers and search and rescue vessel off of New England before being donated to the United States Navy in 1950. She spent most of her career with Naval Service before being decommissioned in 1980 and sold for scrapyard purposes in 1987. The fourth Coastal Guard Cutter, CG-14 was gifted to both services on October 1st 1984 by President Ronald Reagan during his visit to Boston Harbor. She became USCGC Polar Star again after serving as a static base for both service vessels during Operation Coral Sea (July 4th - December 5th 1989). One of the unique aspects about this gift history is that each service has had different crews/crews who have served aboard their respective boats throughout their careers. This allows for more personalized Gift Certificates because each person receiving one will have specific memories connected with that particular cutter or vessel. Additionally, many people who receive Coast Guards Cutters enjoy spending time on their boats due to its comfortable seating and wonderful views from either berth.

Sylacauga is a small town in Alabama, located about 20 miles northwest of Birmingham. Sylacauga was founded in 1836 by Scots-Irish settlers who came to the area from nearby Tuscaloosa and Decatur. The community soon became known for its cotton plantations and for its agricultural production. In the early 21st century, Sylacauga's economy was based largely on tourism, retail trade, and agriculture. The first residents of Sylacauga were Scots-Irish immigrants who came to the area in 1836. They built their homes on land that had been donated by Judge James McMillin. The town quickly became known as a center of culture and commerce due to its connections to the Scotch-Irish community. In addition, Sylacabama's cotton plantations attracted African Americans who worked on the farms around town. During World War II, Sylacauga played an important role in the Allied effort against Nazi Germany. Many American soldiers stationed at Fort Benning near Chattanooga were trained here during the war. After the war, many of these soldiers returned home and began businesses in Sylacuga
