The history of the United States Army in Sylacauga, Alabama goes back to 1861. The city was named for General James H. Sylacauga, who served as a brigadier general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The U.S.Army first arrived in Birmingham, Alabama in 1864 and began garrisoning the area around Sylacauga. In 1868, General John C. Breckinridge moved his army from Chattanooga to Selma, Alabama to support secessionist efforts against the Union government. After three years of fighting and bloodshed, the Confederacy was defeated and lost most of its territory including Alabama. The United StatesArmy continued presence inAlabama until 1901 when it left for good altogether following World War I. In 1931, President Herbert Hoover announced plans to create a new Army Corps of Engineers leaving much of our military infrastructure unused for decades atrophied and neglected. This event is known as “Hoover’s Navy Build-up” and saw many companies leave Sylacauga with their factories being dismantled or abandoned on what would become what is now Druid Hills Cemetery (now part of US 27). Many people living within minutes walking distance of these factories were directly impacted by this event as they experienced extreme poverty and unemployment which led to over 1000 deaths between 1932-1935 from industrial accidents related to wartime production quotas! Despite this past history, we have seen an resurgence in interest in military spending within the last few decades with both local communities and national governments looking for ways to invest money into our armed forces for defense purposes both domestically and abroad! There are currently over 350 active duty members stationed throughout Alabama with nearly 30% serving deployed overseas! The Sylacauga Army National Guard unit was founded on November 1, 1917. The unit was organized and activated at the Sylacauga Arsenal. On December 12, 1917, the army donated four tanks to the unit. The tank regiment was redesignated as Battery A on February 15, 1918. On May 30th, 1918, Battery A fought in the Battle of Beauregard against Confederate troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. After that battle battery moved to Birmingham for training before being deployed to Europe in April 1919 where they fought in various engagements until their return home on October 8th 1919.
Sylacauga is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Sylacauga is located in the east-central part of the county and is bordered to the north by Baldwin City and to the south byMobile. It consists of a single block of downtown with several businesses on both sides of Main Street. The first settler in what would become Sylacauga was Jacob Hensley in 1824. He founded a grist mill on his property which became known as Hensley's Mill. A post office called Sylacauga was established in 1837, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in what would become Sylacaja was built about 1840 by Gifford Pinchot and Drury Price. It became known as Hudson's Schoolhouse after its founder, Hiram Hudson. In 1847, James Edward Post bought land along Main Street from Hensley for $1,000 plus 10% interest in cash or livestock; this land later became known as Post Park. Post started an agriculturalenterprise that grew into one of the largest cotton plantations in Mississippi during the mid 1800s before selling it to John Watson Forbes Sr., who renamed it Forbes' Cotton Plantation after himself during World War II when it became part ofWalmart Incorporated In 1865, two towns were formed within Tuscaloosa County: Uniontown (to the north) and Centerville (to the south). Centerville seceded from Tuscaloosa County to form Clarke County soon afterward In 1903, Sylacauga had a population of 190 people when Poplar Shoals Dam finally went online calming water levels downstream after years of construction work; however just over 20 years later its population had increased to 603 people when new housing developments began popping up around town In 1965 three more towns were formed within Tuscaloasa County:, Uniontown (to the north), Centerville (to the south), and Bridgeport (which lies betweenUniontown andCenterville). Bridgeport split from Tuscaloosa County soon thereafter due to political differences over annexation into Mobile County

Manufacturing played an important role in the city's economy until the early 1970s when it declined as a result of suburbanization and other economic factors Today much of what made Sylacauga so prosperous has been replaced by services such as education and healthcare that make it one ofAlabama's most diverse cities
The city of Sylacauga was founded in 1818 by James Covington and his brother, John Covington. The first courthouse in the town was built in 1824. The city experienced a boom during the antebellum period with growth in trade, industry, and education. In 1840, Sylacauga became a county seat of Jefferson County. Growth slowed during the Civil War but resumed after the war ended. The city experienced another boom during Reconstruction with increased trade and population growth. After the end of Reconstruction, Sylacauga lost its status as a major center of commerce and culture until it regained it following the turn of the century when new industries began to grow there.
