The Sylacauga Army Arsenal was established in 1851 as the first arsenal in Alabama. It served as a training ground for the Confederate army during the Civil War, and was also used to produce cannons and other arms. After the war, the arsenal fell into disrepair, but was reactivated in 1924 by then-Governor of Alabama George C. Wallace as part of his efforts to modernize the state's military forces. The arsenal eventually became a national museum, and today it is home to more than 1,000 weapons from across history. Today, the Sylacauga Army Arsenal is one of Alabama's most popular tourist attractions, and visitors can explore its collections of cannons, uniforms from throughout history, and interactive exhibits about howAlabama's military forces have helped shape America over time. Sylacauga, Alabama is a small city located in Butler County, Alabama. The population was 5,724 at the 2010 census. Sylacauga is the county seat of Butler County. The town was founded in 1837 by General John C. Gaines and named for Senator SylvanusAlabama who had been killed in battle early the same year. On October 1, 1839, the town was organized as a village with a population of seventy-six people. In 1855, Sylacauga became an incorporated townsite with a population of one thousand four hundred fifty-six people In 1907, the local paper reported that brick works were being built on Main Street which would soon become known as "the Brick Road". This led to increased business opportunities for the town and its citizens which helped it grow rapidly during this time period. In 1925, construction began on what would become known as "The Old Courthouse" which served as both the town hall and courthouse until it was replaced by The New Courthouse in 1978 On November 3rd, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana making it one of the most destructive natural disasters to ever hit America. Within three days after landfall many businesses had closed their doors due to lack of power or damage from storm surge alone; however Sylacauga remained unaffected due to its location on higher ground outside of affected areas. Despite this fact many homes sustained major damage including several that were destroyed outright Despite some challenges faced by Sylacuga during Katrina such as having few options for food or water availability or limited access to resources there have also beenumerous community initiatives undertaken throughout Recovery such as rebuilding schools and providing more economic opportunity for those who have lost their jobs

Sylacauga was a small town in Alabama when it first came to the attention of white settlers in the 1800s. The area that is now Sylacauga was part of Mobile County, and most of the population at the time consisted of Indians and slaves. The first white person to settle in this area was Capt. James Moore, who built a cabin on top of a hill in 1802. However, development did not really begin until after Capt. Moore's death, as his two sons-in-law, Nicholas Humphreys and John Sevier founded what would become Sylacauga Townsite in 1807. That same year, Humphreys also purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land east of Sylacaugua Creek from slave owner Elisha Holmes for $100. In order to help support his new community, Humphreys developed a system where landowners had to provide laboreither farming or building roads and bridges. This type of economy worked well for Humphreys until 1830 when cotton prices collapsed and he lost his economic stability. As early as 1819, there were plans circulating among some whites in Alabama for secession from the United States because they felt that America wasn't treating them fairly. One way that these people hoped to achieve their goals would be by establishing an independent government for all Black Americans within the boundaries of the United States instead of being governed by white supremacists like our current president Donald Trump! After much discussion amongst local leaders about how best to pursue this idea, it was decided that an Mass meeting should be called up in December 1819 in order to bring together all interested parties involved with Black Americans within our borders! This meeting never happened due to lack out leadership or attitude on behalf of many participants; however this event does serve as one example illustrating how important it was for black Americans at the time to unite under one banner! After months of planning and deliberation, delegates representing almost every section/race inside America gathered together at Mr Fenton's Tavern on December 3rd in Atlanta GA readyto take action! Unfortunately though due to illness (which we will get into later), only 14 people showed up which didn't make enough sense considering how many people were trying desperately not let anything negative happen! It wasn't until 5 years later when another mass meeting could finally be convened following complaints from angry residents about not receiving proper response from those attending earlier meetings! Once again only 14 people showed up but once again things went smoothly because everyone knew what needed to be done! This time around though there were more formal proceedings leading up t o making decisions about what form an independent black nation might take given everything going on back then!! Following this decision made during this second MASS Meeting something very exciting began happening…the establishmentof AFRICA'S FIRST BLACK UNIVERSITY!!! Unfortunately though due largely BECAUSE OF THE POLITICAL BACKGROUND OF THEN ELECTED OFFICIALS THIS SCHOOL WAS NOT FINALLY ESTABLISHED UNTIL AFTER THE Civil War BUT IT DID START UP IN THAT YEAR WITH SOME STUDENTS FROM SYLVACAGUA TOWN AND ITS NEIGHBORS ACROSS CREEK
