In 1951, the shipbuilders merged with their French counterparts CGN Group et Compagnie de Navigation maritime (CGN) to form CGN/Selma Shipbuilding Company Limited. This company continued building ships for both American navies as well as international customers such as Spain’s Navarra Airlines. In 1966, naval aviation operations were transferred from NAS Pensacola to NAS Selma under command of Commander John Sargent III USNVRR. At this time, Selma became home to NAS Selma-(CG)-225 which served as an operational center for all navy Aviation activities in Alabama including aerial refueling tanker flights over Mobile Bay located on Dryden Field; overflights by helicopter into Mobile County; gunnery practice off Florence Island - these are only a few examples of what NAS Selma(CG)-225 offered its pilots during this time period. A 1968 reorganization saw Commander James Kapp USNVRR assume command of all navy Aviation activities withinAlabama . Under his command NAS Selma(CG)-251 took on additional responsibilities within naval aviation that include providing services related to weather radar sites throughoutt he state while also conducting training missions at various locations such as Baldwin Field near Birmingham; flying boat patrols off Mobile Bay during summertime; conducting armed reconnaissance over Huntsville area using Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft operated by Fifth Fleet aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65).
