The Selma Marines have been deployed to fight in many wars, both during and after the Second World War. They've fought in Korea, Vietnam, and now Iraq and Afghanistan. The Marine Corps has always been a part of America's military, even though it doesn't receive as much press as other branches. The Selma Marines are an important part of this history because they are the only unit in Alabama that is still active with the marine corps. The Selma Marines were organized on September 15th, 1942 by Captain John Southerland. He was a Marine sergeant who had volunteered to become a member of the Selma Constabulary. After he enlisted, he served in various capacities within the marines until he was called up to serve in World War II. He was sent to Japan where he fought against the Japanese troops and then returned home to help arm Alabama for war. After mobilization began there were no limits on how many marines could be recruited from Alabama but when combat began there were not enough volunteers for all units so some units received extra recruits from other states such as Georgia or Mississippi. As combat continued more men arrived but at some points there weren't enough vehicles or supplies available so units had to retreat back into their homes or encampments until they could be replaced by better-equipped forces. During World War II barracks buildings were set up all over Alabama including one near Selma which became known as "the base." This barracks played an important role in providing living space for servicemen and also acted as training ground for new marines before they went off into battle overseas. Units rotated through this facility so everyone got a chance to see what life was like outside of combat while also learning about American culture and customs which helped them prepare for their own future deployments abroad.
