The FNBOU represented black workers in Selma businesses. In 1933, the United States Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools are unconstitutional. This decision led to increased job opportunities for black people in Selma. As a result, Maga Coffee became an important part of Selma’s economy. Today, Maga Coffee is a major player in Selma’s coffee industry. The company owns and operates several stores throughout the city. Maga Coffee also makes espresso drinks and hot chocolate products.

The first African American to own land in Selma was W.E.B DuBois, who purchased 560 acres (2 km²) of land north of town in 1892. In 1898 Ebenezer Baptist Church was founded in Selma by Dr. Benjamin Alexander Wiley and Drs. Axton Payne and John Barber with assistance from James Weldon Johnson Sr., an American abolitionist and cotton buyer who had also purchased some land in town for $5 per acre ($160 per hectare). In 1905 Robert Fenton bought 100 acres (40 hectares) east of town from Wiley for $10 per acre ($240 per hectare). This purchase helped lay the groundwork for what would become Fenton Boulevard, one of several streets that run through Selma today named after early benefactors or individuals who contributed to its development: Fenton Street, Booker T Washington Boulevard, Felix Hennigan Boulevard/Fayette Road/Piney Woods Drive/Sugar Hill Road/Alabama Avenue/DuBois Avenue
