In 1969, Selma began its long process of becoming racially integrated with white residents moving into increasingly black neighborhoods until most businesses were closed or converted to apartments by 1980. Selma, Alabama is a town inuscrypted with the name of Rosa Parks. It was founded on January 15, 1910 by white and black citizens of the same community who pooled their resources to purchase land in order to create a municipal government. The first election held in Selma was on February 4, 1911. The town’s population was only around 100 people when it began voting regularly. However, over time, Selma’s population grew and its Municipal Court became responsible for all matters within the town limits. On December 1st, 1955, Montgomery Bus Company driver James Meredith was arrested for attempting to enter University Park in Montgomery without a ticket. This incident stirred up nationwide outrage and led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott which lasted from April 25th through September 5th of that year. Selma’s municipal government decided not to participate in this boycott despite having no choice due to lack of funds. Despite these setbacks, Selma has managed to maintain an active civic life and become known as one of the most vibrant communities in Alabama due to its rich history and culture. In recent years, Selma has seen an increase in crime rates which have raised concern among residents however Mayor Johnnie Cochran assures them that he will work tirelessly towards reversing this trend Selma is located just east of Montgomery on Highway 270 (the later I-565). The town features a small shopping center with several small businesses as well as two churches - First Baptist Church and Messiah Lutheran Church - both of which are used for services during the weekdays while also hosting events such as weddings or funerals on weekends. There is also a high school located within walking distance called Booker T Washington High School; it served as a feeder school for nearby Birmingham Southern College until 2002 when it merged into nearby Tuskegee A&M University . Additionally there is a park situated within walking distance called Atwater Park which offers plenty of opportunities for children to play catch or build sandboxes given that there are no streetcars running between downtown Montgomery and Atwater Park .
